Yeah, we would also struggle with this if my MIL developed dementia, I’m sorry, that’s rough. In spring of 2021, after the vax and before the delta wave hit, I took Mom to a Mexican restaurant. It was almost like old times. And my dad’s favorite song came on. “He’s here with us!” she said 😭

My husband had to read “Understanding the Times” at the segregation academy his parents sent him to. We got a copy of it at a library sale. Reading it now, it is so blatant in its vision of Christian nationalism, but it’s hard for him to gauge how weird it all is bc he was steeped in it.

The last care plan meeting she attended was on September 21. When I got on the call, I said “Happy Earth, Wind, and Fire day!” No one knew what I meant, but when I said September 21st, she piped up signing “Do you remember, the 21st night of September”

It really is amazing how music transcends the ravages of Alzheimer’s. Midway through my mom’s fight with it, we were on a drive and I laughed when I saw a license plate. I read it out, “867-5309,” and Mom gasped, then sang it. Earlier that day she’d called me “the nice lady who drives her around.”

Above all, be kind to yourself. There will be moments where you wish it was over already. It made me feel like a ghoul and a jerk, but it is an absolutely normal feeling to have, especially once they get past what you know they’d consider a good quality of life.

You’ll definitely have opportunities. The progression is mostly linear, but there are also strange detours. Mom had times of lucidity all the way until her final year. It’s an added layer of complexity to the grief, but there are moments for true bonding and connection.

Yeah, I got a ton of that with regard to whatever’s going on with me physically (most likely fibromyalgia). I’ve always been good at self-advocating in the mental health sphere; the regular medical sphere is harder bc their egos and biases get in the way.

Also doubly lucky that not only is our insurance affordable, the appointments and meds are free. It’s any other medical/dental work where I’d have to meet a deductible, which we cannot pay bc single-income household/gov’t doesn’t think I’m disabled enough 😩

I’m very lucky to have a great therapist and also a great psych LPN, who continue to see me remotely. They help a lot, but I have been stuck in a pit of grief that I know added meds wouldn’t touch without making me a zombie. It’s just other docs I avoid bc they don’t take Covid precautions 😩

🫂 I was misdiagnosed with bipolar 2 back when I had a uterus. That was, in fact, PMDD, which rectified itself after the hysterectomy. And I’ve never had psychosis before, but it was a truly remarkable set of events that set it off, so my brain probably is safe until Alzheimer’s hits. But. 😳

We made it 34 minutes into the movie, then we took a break, then it was time to feed the cats, and when I came back into the living room, @ashmcgonigal.com had taken half the books off our bookshelf bc he’s moving a speaker. “You left me alone,” he said when I sputtered out “What happened?”
