any chance you've read Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthony Doerr? in that lovely book, there's a boy from 15th century Bulgaria who's outcast due to a cleft palate (!) and whose two best friends are the best oxen of the village (raised since birth). the story that follows is as bittersweet as any dog book.
