Carnegie, Frick &others built a luxury lake resort on a hilltop above Johnstown to avoid the pollution in Pittsburgh—that they’d created. In 1889 the dam broke. 2000+ died, some burned alive in a fire of debris at a bridge. Bodies were found months later or never. Homestead: 1892. The rage is real.

The Homestead Strike happened just 3 years after the Johnstown Flood, and it targeted the companies of owners involved in the flood. After the flood, none of the wealthy industrialists were held accountable. The two events may not have been explicitly linked, but people remember injustice.

I’ve followed that generation in business, too. Every job I ever wanted was occupied by someone who held onto it way past the time when they should have retired. It sucks.
