“Do not use your phone to answer phone calls” is not advice as much as it’s a condemnation of regulatory inaction that has led a vital means of communication to ruin.

Is it just a regulatory problem? I feel like the industry could have done (a lot) more to address this and have just chosen not to.

I used to send all unknown numbers to spam, but unfortunately a few people I have to talk to block their numbers. Luckily I usually know when they are going to call and everyone else gets sent to VM.

I put it on speaker and remain silent. Most of the scams are in Mandarin or Cantonese which makes sense if someone is targeting Vancouver numbers.

I have a kid. If he's not at home, you can be damn sure I'm answering at least local calls, even if I'm pretty sure it's spam. Not answering the phone is not really an option.

It's also why you should not believe any polls that use cold calling. Because only people who fall for scams answer those polls.

Wild to think we can't use a thing so vitally necessary to everyday life. I went two weeks without a phone and I couldn't get paid, couldn't talk to my two bosses, couldn't be in contact with the person I rideshare with. But everyone wants to contact me about my supposed Comcast account.

"Don't answer your phone." "Don't read your messages." "Don't click on headlines." "Don't even think about proposing that what society needs is actually regulatory bodies and support models to make scamming a less desirable means of making a living."

I'd settle for an airstrike on a few Kolkata police stations. They're so laden with bribes they should just sink into the earth. New Delhi needs to send in some federal swagger & fuck up the key players, for lack of a better mission statement.

I’ve been having to tell so many people (especially boomers) to not even answer and hang up. That alone means they will keep contacting because you engaged

While I agree, this is a problem that requires international cooperation to solve. I can’t speak for the U.S. but a significant portion of scam calls in Canada originate overseas. When countries can’t even agree or coordinate on simple common sense things, I’m not holding my breath for this.

"led a vital means of communication to ruin" - this also applies to email, text messaging, social media, and every other means of communication between persons and within groups, when it can be usurped/"enshittified" by outside interests for their own purposes.
