in addition to how awful airbnbs are for local rental markets they haven't even been that great for travelers for years. most of the time i'd rather just stay in a hotel if it's going to be nearly as expensive anyway
I'll always remember the first one I booked, which was a spare room in a chicago couple's house. they worked in service/tourism, invited me to hang out with their friends, gave advice for getting around, and one night we chatted & drank. the very NEXT one I booked 1y later was just a shitty hotel
Traveling with my family is so much more pleasant in an airbnb. Real suite hotels with kitchens and separate bedrooms would be so much better but they are hard to find and usually full.
companies that do airbnbs as a business model are the fucking worst. ive had the misfortune of staying in a few sonder apartments, and expensive but forgettable is the best it’s ever been. one had a cabinet full of dirty dishes and a broken fridge. at least the hotel will put you in a different room
Years ago it was way cheaper and hosts included a lot more. These days I will take a hotel any day. They are clean, private, and you know what you’re getting.
Yeah, my experience with airbnbs is essentially hotels with chores. I've stayed in a nice one, but I mostly resent it when my family chooses them over an actual hotel.
i love a *nice* airbnb but 90% of them are run by soulless landlords now. and they leave me a list of damn chores after i've already paid a cleaning fee
maybe i'm dumb or unafraid but my family has always stayed in motels on road trips because they're cheap and everywhere and that's working just fine for me as an adult now that airbnb is just landlords+
Add Vrbo to that list too. What's Really annoying was when I was looking up rates on Hotels dot com last night, & they had Vrbo rentals mixed in with the *actual* hotels listings. No thanks! I'll pay hotel rates if it means I don't have to wash any dishes or vacuum on the last day.
my wife wanted us to stay in an airbnb for an upcoming wedding this weekend so we wouldn’t have to drive back to a hotel
the airbnb is a converted shed, literally in someone’s backyard, for $30 more than a hotel
I just looked at her
she knows I hate uber and airbnb
airbnb went from being a chill way to take a vacation where you could do a bit of cooking to literally just having a very shitty and paranoid landlord for a weekend
A lot of them outright banning “House Parties” as well as their absurd cleaning requests makes it a hard sell for large groups. Who are the only ones it makes economic sense for more often than not.
This was essentially a tactic of “disrupting” the market with competitive rates and service to establish the brand only to ultimately become a lesser equally expensive version of the market they disrupted in the first place. See also: rideshare.
half the air bnb’s Ive stayed at they straight up have ring cameras all over the outside so you can’t toke on the property but if u stay at a hotel you can just find where the staff are toking
What sucks is that they've basically vacuumed up the entire rental cabin market, which is why we're stuck using them when we travel still since we basically always look for cabins
We used to love staying at AirBNBs, mostly for the pet policies, kitchen, and separate rooms for kids/parents. But our last trip we stayed in hotels and I’m not sure when we’ll brave AirBNB again. Too many bad experiences.
every single new condo building in my neighborhood is 1/4th Airbnbs that cost $1000 for a weekend. i just checked the app and it's every single building that went up in the last four years
