"When the Times opinion page pretends that conservatism is David Brooks or Bret Stephens, when it maintains the comforting illusion that American politics is a contest of ideas, it is not exposing its readers to uncomfortable truths — it is sheltering them." www.vox.com/policy-and-p...
Oh man if you’re going to link to something that quotes Glenn Greenwald approvingly please put a content warning on it.
I’m trying to remember if by 2018 his schtick was fully played out or if it lasted until the pandemic…
Rich people are primarily concerned with hoarding wealth. Poor people don't own newspapers. Even things you would consider bastions of left thinking are ultimately controlled by conservative interests if you follow the money. There is only 1 party, and it functions like the WWE essentially.
By pretending Trump is just another zany GOP candidate, the NYT is complicit in bearding the emerging fascist surge among the poor and disenfranchised. These people in Iowa said they WANT a dictator. It's the same way they rejected science in the pandemic. It's not ideas, it's emotion...mostly rage
Damn, old column, but not a single word really needs to be changed. One of my favorite jokes from the Trump era was Paul Ryan insisting that he never heard about Trump's tweet because he was focusing on his "better way agenda". The Times is not deluding themselves as much as they want to delude us.
Here’s my big take: in a world of social media, blogs, substack, etc. there is no reason for newspaper editorial pages to exist.
(Yes, I realize they’re a massive income source for the papers, one of the few they have left but still…)
I always noticed the NY Times' conservative writers were not good representations of conservative views. That is undisputible. But back when I was a dumbass who fell for fake Republican platforms, I only saw how NYT sometimes presented views more silly (the rarer case) than real Republicans. ...
The Times's problem is, they are writing for Greenwich Republicans, who only care about eliminating any taxes on them, and the last few Rockefeller Republicans, who also only care about eliminating taxes, but they'd like them eliminated for the unwealthy too.
“[Trump is]one of their people, he hates who they hate, and he drives the libs crazy; that’s good enough.” I have literally had Trump supporters say this to me. They even admitted his probably crazy but “he sure gets under the liberals’ skin.”
Our local upstate NY public radio station holds a "rountable" discussion every morning, and the conservatives and right wingers never argue for the *actual* things Trump runs on and promotes, and they never mount an active, positive defense of those things
