Friends, I'm getting this error message when I send emails to Yahoo accounts from my work email: "550 5.7.9 This mail has been blocked because the sender is unauthenticated. Yahoo requires all senders to authenticate with either SPF or DKIM." Anyone have any idea what this is? just started today.

Again, H5N1 in wild birds is pretty dang difficult for a human to acquire. But it's never a bad idea to take precautions, especially if you have any degree of immunocompromise, when dealing with animal feces, not just because of H5N1! It's poop! It's pathogens!

When dealing with animal feces, it's always a good idea to take precautions BUT H5N1 bird flu has been a thing in the U.S. since late 2021, when it was discovered in wild, migratory birds. So H5N1 in wild birds is not brand new, and, importantly, does **not** easily transmit to humans 🧵

The main thing no one (no one!) should be consuming is raw dairy products. "Raw dairy" refers to dairy that hasn't been pasteurized. So no unpasteurized milk, no cheese made from unpasteurized milk. (Pasteurization is the process of flash heating a liquid, like milk, to kill harmful pathogens) 🧵

It's possible that if you're in close physical proximity to a sick bird, you could breathe in virus. Again, this is not really a general concern but is more applicable to people who are, for example, keeping chickens.

The H5N1 bird flu is *not* well adapted to infecting humans. There has been no known human-to-human spread of H5N1 in the US. (The goal is to keep it that way!) People have been infected by close contact with infected birds (eg touching sick bird, touching your eyes) or, now, with infected cow 🧵

I'd be deeply concerned that a flu virus that gets good at infecting pigs could easily make the jump to infecting humans. Would the case fatality rate remain as high? We don't know. I really don't want to find out.

We really want to keep H5N1 out of pigs. Why? Every time there's viral transmission, there's an opportunity for the virus to mutate, and the potential for that mutation to make the virus better at infecting, in this case, pigs. Here's the catch: pigs are pretty dang close to humans. 🧵

Really important question! Our goal must be to prevent H5N1 from getting good at infecting humans. Why? Worldwide, we know of 888 human H5N1 infections since 2003. 463 of those people died. That's a case fatality rate of 53%. What do pigs have to do with it? 🧵

Cats can get H5N1. In the U.S., we've seen cats who live/work on dairy farms get H5N1. A number of cats in Poland who weren't associated with farms got H5N1. I'd be most concerned about a cat who is allowed outdoors. Cats are pretty good hunters of birds, eating a bird sick with H5N1 would be bad🧵

Particularly since cats can be pretty good at hunting, and birds with H5N1 may be easier prey. Mostly my concern is letting the cat get near either any alive birds or any dead birds. You'll have to assess those risks depending on your particular catio situation

If you've followed me for awhile, you'll know I take feline wellness very seriously, so I've looked at the cat literature pretty carefully 😹 There was a H5N1 clade in Poland (H5 2.3.4.4b) that seemed pretty good at infecting cats, so I actually am a bit worried about cats. 🧵

In recent months, we have reports of Canada geese dying from H5N1. It is reasonable to assume the birds you're seeing have died from H5N1. Again, H5N1 is not easily transmitted to people, but dying/dead H5N1 birds *do* pose a heightened risk. I would def avoid any dead/dying birds.
