Watched Chris Nash's In a Violent Nature (2024) last night; it's good but flawed, and the flaws (ham-fisted exposition, cartoonish gore, some longueurs) are such as to keep it from being *really* good. But I really dig the tone Nash establishes in much of it.

I’m convinced that the reason so many Dems are like this is trauma; pure, unprocessed, unaddressed trauma from the election of Trump. They’re all terrified to the point of hysteria. It’s the only explanation that makes sense.

It’s not so much doomerism—where there’s life there’s hope—as it is disgust, profound disgust. Even if American fascism fell apart tomorrow I’d never get over the fact it got to this point. So it goes; onwards, I guess.

sometimes the most annoying people in politics can be right. the orange man is indeed bad. if you vote, you shouldn’t vote for republicans under any circumstances, which typically leaves one option

And it’s obvious now that many a century ago didn’t fully get it—the “roaring 20s” looks like a great deal of repression of trauma. A lot of current “post-pandemic” culture now feels like the same sort of denial.

I regard "doomerism" as distinct from grief. It is, if anything, a means of processing grief. And not all such means are equally healthy. Grief has been earned; now is a time for mourning. But taking off the black veil after the prescribed period is just as important as initially donning it.

Yesterday I closed my news and social apps for a couple of hours, dragged my husband along on a food rescue, rested when I didn't feel great and you know what? Today feels better because of the limits I set and where I chose to put my energy. Writing this down bc I will IMMEDIATELY forget it.

Almost fifty years to the day when Richard Nixon was forced to resign for crimes that are now no longer crimes. So it goes; this is where America was headed the moment the civil rights movements of the Sixties challenged white supremacy.

In January 2020, surveying the political landscape, I wrote a poem with the line "Only catastrophe can save us now." We all know what happened next; please believe me that I say this now with the greatest fear and trembling: "Only catastrophe can save us now."

I know smut may seem like a frivolous thing to be upset about, but crushing it is part of fascism. Controlling all forms of sexual expression is fascism. Only allowing certain kinds is fascism. Smut peddlers are always canaries in the coal mines.

I think the reason Philip K Dick is still the predominant SF writer of the last century is, he was the only one who foresaw a future where everything would be boring, inconvenient and dehumanising, and where the only way you can win is to somehow refuse to give up your humanity.
