I need everyone to take a good look at this photo. Yes, the deep red states are governed by absolute idiots. That doesn't mean the people that live here are all reflect their heartless "leadership".
I promise you, there are more people fighting for change than you realize.
This is the kind of thing that will drive voters in November. This is what will break that brick-thick arrogance of the GOP in states they think they own. Not arguments over the border, but times when the people show what they really care about, and what they want. This is an amazing photo.
I don't want to leave Oklahoma. I met my now husband here shortly after moving to OKC. There's some great people here, idk it seems like the bad people outnumber the good.
My brother-in-law is a gay man who lives in Oklahoma. Part of him wants to leave, but he also wants to stay close to his grandmother, who he's very close to, and is too old and sick to move. These are real people with real lives in these states.
This is very moving. I’m glad people are gathering to mourn. And be with one another in their grief. It may make other gender nonconforming kids feel recognized and safer.
One of the things that most reliably infuriates me is the smug liberal insistence that people in red states deserve their oppression because "they voted for it". They didn't vote for it. SOME people vote for it, and the others are fucking stuck. They don't need some smug asshole saying "cope".
I never lost faith that a better world is possible. I never will, I turn the other cheek. I am a pacifist and will never abide violence against me, i simply turn the other cheek. Be good to one another, and do well. Bruises and scars are the tattoos that mark my soul, showing that a man, he abides
‘There are no red states or blue states. There never were. As I wrote in my book The View from Flyover Country, “America is purple — purple like a bruise.”’
Sarah Kendzior
People tend to oversimplify to keep their faith unshaken in general and holding entire states to their reps beliefs is an oversight that assumes our democratic process is fair (and it never was).
Every space on earth has worms in the dirt, so to speak. Best not to treat entire states as a monolith.
I am glad the community can come together to mourn and support each other.
I hope the community can also come together to fight.
I do not mean that metaphorically.
Your Nazi neighbors are going to try to drive you underground.
The state will not protect you.
You must protect each other.
AZ too has some notorious crackpots but by and large people are good. We forget that OK and many other red states have long histories of Democrat control. That all changed over the last 40 years since dark money bought the GOP and focused on taking over states. Citizens United gave them free rein.
And important to remember, these places often have entrenched right wing political leadership that remain that way through severe partisan gerrymandering. Even if a majority of folks in a red state lean further left, they literally can’t vote hard enough to change the status quo.
Thank you. It’s hard to remain positive when living under the whims of a fundamentalist evangelical supermajority, and the last thing we need is smug dismissiveness from those who live in states where their vote can actually make a substantive difference.
