in 2020 “Biden is too old” was a big narrative going into the first debate with Trump, but he performed well and shut the concerns down. Ever since then, concerns about his age have had a boy who cried wolf element to them, and i think that’s part of why so many people were caught off guard.

This is EXACTLY my journey. Every previous time people said he was gonna look old and doddering he was good, better than that even. I assumed it was gonna be exactly the same, but it wasn't just bad, it was worse than my lowest expectations. it felt like a knife I didn't see it coming.

I also think that elite dismissal of those concerns has been helpful for him in remaining viable. Now that the elites are in step with the public on this issue, hard to see how he recovers.

George Carlin had a bit about how people looking in the mirror at themselves don't say "I'm getting old" but instead say "I'm getting oldER." I think his insight was that most people fear being "old" as something like an on/off switch, almost identical to how we fear being dead.

The age thing is a product of many of our media's flaws. Because they mistake "neutrality" for "objectivity" thry can talk about the age thing in a way they can't talk about Trump saying he'd put his enemies in military show trials. Objectively reporting on that wouldn't be staying neutral.

There's also the fact that the guy he's been running against and compared to for years is barely any younger than he is. The simple fact of his age by itself didn't seem to mean much in that context.

i’ll admit i thought he had the juice for the campaign until the debate, because he pulled it together every time he needed to. Every debate, every state of the union, etc. was always prefaced by people saying Biden didn’t have it and being proven wrong. but they were bound to be right eventually.
