.@nytimes.com home page this AM has no mention of the Biden/Parkinson's story. Baumgaertner, Baker & the editors offer no update, no mention of the White House doctor's letter. The story was poorly reported, launched a rumor-stampede and they'll get away with it. www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-roo...

Jane McAlevey died on Sunday at the age of fifty-nine. Sarah Jaffe writes on the legendary labor organizer and author, who inspired a generation of young people cut off from class politics to think about the still-central role of the workplace.

We’ve lost a giant. Please read Jane McAlevey’s work. It’s about far more than labor, it is about the human and systemic nature of all political change.

Today, @lsepper.bsky.social and Lindsay Wiley conclude our series on the LPE of Insurance, arguing that recent religious challenges to the Affordable Care Act should be understood as a major new vector in the campaign against social insurance in the United States.

France dropkicked a baldly fascist political coalition out of office, imo if we can’t manage to do the same we should give back the Statue of Liberty

Any Democrat in these states who doesn’t lean on this hard shouldn’t be in office. It’s a gift.

Hearing that Jane passed away this morning. An immense loss. Her teachings changed much of my life. If you've never read her work, you should make it a priority to do so today.

Maybe it's time that the @nytimes.com should step aside for a younger, fitter, more coherent newspaper.

"If we are calling for Biden to step aside because someone must stop Trump from bringing down the republic, then surely it would have made more sense to first call for Trump to step aside?"

Granted I’m a big prisons nerd, but still, it’s been a whole day, and I’m really surprised at how happy this has made me. A day on and I’m elated by it. (Timpson was also chair of the Prison Reform Trust.)

For those who don't know: this is James Timpson of Timpson key cutters/shoe repairs/dry cleaners. His company employs ex-convicts and even runs work training programmes in prisons. Genuinely inspired choice.

And if he doesn't? You're gonna spend time up to the convention on this as your sole priority rather than Trump?

And if Biden doesn't step aside and you had 4-6 weeks to use, would you have used it to push Biden to cede the stage or hammer on Trump. That's the question I am asking.

Perceptions are in part a feature of how the media shapes these stories. Saying this is all on Biden is not a full analysis--some of this is ginned-up controversy.

Yes, he may or may not have cognitive impairment, but he's not a psychopath. Point is we have 45 days or so until Labor Day are we going to keep banging on about this or focus on Trump. Each day Trump gets a free pass from us is good for him.

You know what? Go on about Biden's age and debate performance. Me? I'll focus on the existential threat that Donald Trump and his minions represent. We all have limited time and energy. Do you really want to spend July and August talking about Biden's infirmity? Do you really think this is helping?

Don't let his lies scare you out of sharing the details of Project 2025 with everyone you know — especially those who are on the fence about their vote this year.

There's good reason to believe knowing about Project 2025 focuses people's minds on the stakes.

.@msf.bsky.social is getting blowback on its decision to get rid of its historic Access to Medicines campaign. They are wrapping this in the bureaucratic language of "restructuring," but none of those who have worked with the A2M campaign are buying their excuses. www.thelancet.com/journals/lan...

But yet the @nytimes.com will ALWAYS insist that it has no viewpoint, no politics, they're just "doing journalism." Can someone write about this? I don't care what your politics are but please don't tell me you don't have any at all. It's just dishonest and manipulative.

Leave it to the impartial, apolitical, all-wise judges—appointed for life and purely on merit to a completely non-activist judicial institution—to turn 4th of July into an occasion for national mourning. You ruined hot dogs. And democracy.

The public is not responding to the debate. They are responding to the irresponsible media coverage of the debate. We are back in “but her emails” territory and there is nothing reasonable people—and actual experts—can do about it. Extraordinarily frustrating and depressing.

The key here is that "very important people" don't seem to be bothered by this. It all is horse-race politics up to this precipice: who is winning, who is losing the day? There is no there there in American political journalism at places like the NY Times. They cannot rise to the occasion.

No dictators please. His fate was awful. No way to sugar-coat it even with the poetry. But my first trip to Russia, to St. Petersburg in 93, I went into a bookstore and found Kamen, the book in which this appears and marveled that is was there, then, still.

In another life, I was a student of Silver Age Russian poetry, and loved no one more than Osip (and Nadezda) Mandelstam. It ended terribly for him. But his poetry outlasted the dictators.
