"U.S. police departments have gotten smaller—and the violent crime rate is still plummeting. So what is going on?"
What's ALWAYS gone on.
Cops do not stop crime. They never have.
Real "tough on crime" measures are well-funded schools, free daycare, and mental health services. Always have been.
+1. Major misconception I’ve seen is the belief police prevent crimes. No, police RESPOND to crimes that have already occurred. By the time the police are notified it is already too late.
Prosecution and safety is still a valid point tho. Sure, prevention reigns supreme. But we also see the same in medicine. Just because its better to socially uplift people to prevent diseases, doesnt mean we dont end up needing doctors and nurses.
Barely saw a cop while in Austria. Asked hotel clerk if there was a reason I shouldn't walk across Vienna to an art museum. "I wouldn't go if you don't like art." Sense of safety, 95%.
Landed in Germany. Police w/machine guns in the terminal. Lots of cops on the street. Sense of safety, 55%. #acab
Since it looks like we'll have another Labour landslide soon I remember what Blair, the first leader of the last one, said
"Tough on crime, and tough on the causes of crime."
He was an asshole in many ways and went a bit messianic, but there was so much good done by that government
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it until someone smarter than me does a study on it so I can just quote it
Atari and PlayStation did more to stop crime than anything any pig has ever done
Removing lead from gasoline did more to stop crime than anything else. Most under-reported story of my lifetime, IMO. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles...
Police departments shrank because they’re paying cops gobs of money to essentially retire early and eventually bullies grow a conscience and want to tap out of the murdilating.
And that first part "they've gotten smaller" is so not true. Come to MTG's district in GA and witness a giant black & white SUV roaming every street, with flashing blue lights in every parking lot. Feel like the presence has doubled in the last year or so.
People who think crime is rampant should go look at some crime stats from the 70's. It was mad max back then compared today. Crime has snaked ever so slightly up since 2014, when it was at it's lowest, with a spike during/"post" covid but even at it's worst after 2014 it isn't even close to the 70's
You know what has gone up? Crime by Cop.
Theft (aka 'Civil forfeiture').
Assault in all its forms up to and including murder (but 'Qualified immunity').
All manner of prejudice, bigotry, hatred, and sheer fucking idiocy!
Most of the rest of the world is laughing at your cops & robbers country! 💝
Why not throw in a living minimum wage? You know, the idea that making enough money from a regular job puts a safe roof over your head, healthy food on the table and keeps the utilities on? Enough left over to save, take time off and stay respectably clothed?
Nah they're busy steady harassing folks for bs reasons. No insurance but you have to get to your job or you don't eat? Three days in jail mfer! Government funded gangs.
