Setting out what type of austerity was needed in Austria embedded the reason why this depoliticisation was crucial. Why such arrangements are the historical predecessors of contemporary interventions is more than obvious. That they were seen as failures at the time is also relevant.

Interesting development. If the ICJ rules in favour of S Africa (even if it only means provisional measures), Israel might try to ignore it but such a verdict undermines Germany's Staatsräson argument. Which is why, I presume, they take this active role. www.bundesregierung.de/breg-de/aktu...

Heute daran erinnern, dass es 1937 aus der Kulturstadt Weimar durchaus bürgerlichen Protest gegen das geplante KZ gab. Aber nicht gegen das KZ, sondern den Namen: Weil "Ettersberg" ja gleich Goethe. Kompromiss war "Buchenwald"; danach wurde massiv von Zwangsarbeit profitiert. Und von nichts gewusst.

🇺🇦 Terrible news from Ukraine: Pokrovsk district, in Donetsk region, where again, civilians, including children, were killed by Russia's S300 missile strikes. As rescuers still search the rubble tonight, we know of 11 dead, including a 3 year old girl & her brothers, aged 7 and 9.

Am 4. Januar 1940 stirbt der Magdeburg|er Sozialdemokrat Ludwig Wellhausen im KZ Sachsenhausen. Er war ein Jahr zuvor von der Gestapo verhaftet sowie im August 1939 nach umfangreichen und quälenden Verhören ohne Prozess in das KZ eingewiesen worden.

“Testing” such a hypothesis almost never takes the form of pointing at failures of democratic control but rather on promoting instances where CBI is presented as responsible for success. But it remains a biased presentation as the measures are so chosen so as to confirm the hypothesis.

CBI rests chiefly on the presupposition that politics (or, in reality, democratic control) is unfit for making important monetary decision. This assumption frames the whole literature: central bankers are right even when they are wrong and “politicians” wrong even when they are right.

On another note, reading that the Colorado Supreme Court disqualified Trump from running in the presidential election. This ruling will be reviewed by the US Supreme Court on January 4th. If they had any humour, they would have put it for January 6th. 😱

The French parliament just passed a new immigration bill and it’s the most extreme in history. It’s so extreme that some members of Macron’s party said it was written by Marine Le Pen’s RN party. Macron’s “centrist” party united with the right and far right to pass the law. Very dark times.
