When an autistic person shares an experience similar to yours when you are talking about something, weā€™re not trying to make it about us, we are giving you or citations for our empathy. Not just, ā€œI feel you.ā€ Itā€™s, ā€œI feel you and hereā€™s exactly why!ā€ And I prefer this!

When I left the animal welfare world a few years ago, advocates were already pushing for an even better system: stunning them with gas (ā€œcontrolled atmosphere stunning,ā€ or ā€œCASā€), which essentially doesnā€™t fail. But would require new infrastructure investments.

Also, chickens sometimes twist & miss the stun bath, so they die painfully. Some even wiggle away from the kill blade, & eventually die by boiling alive in the defeathering vat./

That said, stun baths arenā€™t perfect either. Chickens are dipped in the bath upside down, hanging by their feet. Their legs often get hurt or broken while being put in the shackles, especially when done quickly by overworked slaughterhouse workers./

Itā€™s possible to kill a chicken so that they pass out instantly, as you said, but itā€™s not consistent. It depends a lot on the skill & care of the butcher, & even then, itā€™s uncertain. Stunning in the electro-bath is much more consistent./

I spent a few years as an in-house attorney for a few different animal welfare nonprofits. Although these organizations had an ideological bent, they also had animal welfare scientists on staff, whose judgment & expertise I trust. Their opinion was generally that no-stun slaughter is unethical./

This is the nature of the ā€œautistic #meltdownā€

When our frustration level exists the realm of the tolerable, we will do anything to distract ourselves from the overwhelming feelings

We literally cannot do anything else, until our nervous system somehow gets down-regulated. Weā€™re not being dramatic

And while weā€™re usually quite good at giving each other the benefit of the doubt, it feels to us that neurotypicals only very rarely do this - for each other, or for us Understanding neurodivergent communication takes the same dedication as trying to come to understand any other outgroupā€™s language

The line between a disability & a personality flaw or or weakness is likewise fairly arbitrary. Generally, if a weakness is unusual enough, far enough outside the norm, itā€™s pathologized. Itā€™s a relative judgment.

ā€œDisabilityā€ just means being unable to do something that most others can do. Itā€™s an entirely relative term. You can be in tip-top physical shape, perfect health FOR YOU, but if you canā€™t meet certain societal standards, you are disabled in societyā€™s eyes./

I think very often directness is taken as coldness or meanness (see: life as an autistic person) While I often see that directness as as a kind of kindness itself (both when I deliver it myself and receive it from others)

Iā€™ve thought about it a lot, because my sister is trans, & being a woman is so important for her, so core to her self-identity. I donā€™t feel that way. Iā€™m very certain Iā€™m not a man, & I donā€™t have a problem being a woman, soā€¦Path of least resistance.

A lot of autistic people have an ā€œatypicalā€ relationship with gender. Many of us are trans. Others, like me, feel kind of detached from gender.

A lot of autistic people exist in a world where people make it clear that we did something wrong, but hardly ever explain what went wrong. After enough of this, confusion, anxiety, and self-doubt become near-constant companions in social situations

Being autistic is more than a list of traits in the DSM. It involves differences in how we communicate, our thought processes, memories, values, & interests, even our sensory perception. We literally donā€™t see the world the same as others. It fundamentally shapes every part of us, good & bad.
