yeah, streaming a song however many times does not remotely equate to actual sales, especially considering how poorly streaming services pay artists- like if some musician in the '70s claimed he sold the equivalent of a million records because they played it on the radio a lot

One hill I’m willing to die on is that streams are not sales & streaming a song 1,250 times is not the same as buying it & we should not compare achievements by artists who were able to get people to do the latter to the shifted goal posts defined by the low-stakes passive music consumption of today

I can only imagine not releasing a clean version of the full album might be limiting the reach of her music to people who are old-school (or maybe kids whose parents who have content controls on their devices that hide explicit music on their streaming accounts)?

This is kind of a weird thing for me to care about. I personally have no objection to profanity/explicit lyrics in music. And I guess if she’s not doing a physical release in stores, it’s probably not that important (given all the context I’ve laid already).

Once we hit that breaking point, the industry seemed to never really look back. Guess this makes since in hindsight: with the hip-hop takeover, most top 40 songs in the urban music market were explicit anyway. But it seemed like an unspoken rule that “clean” versions would still be accessible.
