A large part of my adult trauma therapy has been processing the isolation I experienced and how everyone never tried to understand how hard it was to just exist for me. Instead, I was punished. I hate seeing this repeated for other kids.

You know the best way to help me self-regulate at his age? Let me play computer games, which I was interested in and felt competent at when school bored me to tears and was a source of anxiety and depression. You can't punish ADHD kids into being better. It doesn't work.

"Help my ASD/ADHD grand child is out of control" thread on NZ subreddit is wild. The kid has been grounded for a month with no electronic devices at age 15. He has no private space at home and has his school search his locker regularly for drugs at caregiver request. 'Why is this happening?' 🤦♂️

In a 2022 survey of an extremely high sample of NZ psychiatrists they found that: "High burnout appears to affect one in three psychiatrists in New Zealand" "45% agreed they would leave their current job if able and 87% disagreed that they are working in a well-resourced mental health service"

They can't even support the staff we have which will lead to this sort of turnover. This is also not a situation where you can just sub another psychiatrist in and expect things to be ok. Patient relationships and trust take time to establish. Having a mental health minister doesn't mean shit.

Burnout in psychiatrists is an extreme issue. They also do have to deal with aggressive psychotic people as part of their job (please note not all psychotic people are aggressive). The government announced 500 new staff by 2030 which to anyone who has a clue about mental health is unrealistic.

Yeah I laughed so hard at that. Anyone who actually knows how the mental health system understands how unachievable that target is... We currently train around 16 new Clin Psychs a year as a country (due to low completion rate and acceptance rates).

This kind of quote really gets my goat. 1. No it absolutely hasn't. 2. New Zealand didn't do this - it was often people sharing extremely difficult stuff publicly that increased awareness. 3. We have a culture where you can talk about mild mental health, but nothing more than that.

I am always horrified at this cost, but then I work it out to an hourly rate and considering I live in the middle of nowhere and it's my only entertainment, over 5 years it probably ends up costing me around 44 cents an hour based on some napkin math.

Nothing frustrates me more than the lack of some specialist therapists we desperately need like queer neurodivergent therapists, especially with trans understanding.. There are so few I can refer to, and most won't engage due to 'complexity'.

Running group coaching/educational classes on ADHD and having people interact with others and start to feel 'normal' in a crowd is one of the best parts about my job. Having groups finish is also one of the bittersweet parts. Happy they get a lot of out of it, but always sad to see them go.

You should feel your feelings instead of rationalising your way out of having them. The inverse of this is true in people who complain about people in better off circumstances needing to shut up because you have it worse. It's not a competition. Both of these make everyone generally worse off.

People stop rationalising your suffering and accept that it's ok for things to be shit and to be upset about it. 'But I am better off than someone in worse circumstances' is a way of gaslighting yourself into believing you are not allowed to be upset unless at rock bottom. It's unhealthy.
