I don't consume enough MTM to argue for or against this framing. But beating Trump should be easy and the Dems are making it as hard as possible. Complaining about coverage and responding to reasonable doubts by giving marching orders ain't the way to dig out of this hole.

Settled into being a .270 w/power hitting, pitch-framing master. Is hitting 18-26 HRs for 12 straight years some sort of record? His career was foreshortened in the AL once the defensive shift came into vogue...he was thrown out on line drives to short RF dozens of times. Gomez knew BMac was right.

18. Brian McCann -less heralded than fellow mid-'05 callup Jeff Francoeur, he ended up lapping him and then some in terms of career value. His '06 .333/.388/.572 at 22 was insane - were he not a catcher, his career would have had a tinge of disappointment. But nobody expects Cs to do that every year

..but it wasn't to be. Partly due to team success, and partly because of the era in which he pitched, he was blatantly overworked in his age 21-23 seasons, averaging 243 IP/year. He gutted out some additional years when he probably should have been shut down, and that was it. But what a time we had!

19. Steve Avery -like his rotation mates, he struggled in his first exposure to major league hitters. But he proved to be the final piece of the puzzle in '91, winning 18 games and then completely dominating the Pirates in two NLCS starts (each following a Braves loss). Next big thing, he was...

Of course, he struck the decisive blow to deliver (along with Glavine, another boo bird target of fans for a decidedly different reason) the Braves' only WS title in the 63 seasons between '57 and '21. Moved on to the AL, where he had several more good seasons and bowed out with the Moneyball A's.

20. David Justice -arrived as Murph's replacement in '90 a patient line-drive machine. His yearly results were oddly inconsistent, though he was never less than good. Some years he'd hit in the .250s, others well over .300. Many fans disliked his arrogance, and he'd hear boo birds when he struggled.

The thing I can't stop thinking about is this: I'm 48, and in my adult lifetime there has been one Republican who won the popular vote. But I will probably spend the rest of my life under the authority of a Supreme Court dominated by hard right conservatives. How is that democracy?

Now injured, of course, and so it remains to be seen if he was just a bolt from the blue. He is as self-confident as any elite athlete has to be, but has a thoughtful and contemplative manner that appeals to me, and that jibes well with his rotation mates. Hoping to root for him for many years.

21. Spencer Strider -from one K king to another, no stats recitation needed for those currently paying attention. So dominant so early in his career that I occasionally breathed a sigh of relief when he gave up a few runs, lest he upset the delicate balance on which the health of the sport relies.

To that point, he had faced 227 batters on the season and struck out 113 of them. Nobody had ever struck out half the batters they'd faced in more than a few innings in a full season. After a leadoff single, he struck out the side to do the unprecedented. 1.01 ERA, 0.654 WHIP, just amazing stuff.

22. Craig Kimbrel -in 2012, in terms of completing the task assigned, he was the most dominant baseball player I've ever seen. I watched Game 162 of that season, an otherwise meaningless game against the Pirates. Kimbrel came in for the ninth in a non-save situation, but a record was on the line...

Also, the platoon splits can't be ignored. .237/.310/.439 in his career batting lefty, .337/.362/.564 righty. What are we doing here, Ozzie?

23. Ozzie Albies -has the best career as a 2B in franchise history, and emanates joy at being a ballplayer. He and Arcia were a crackup last year. He'd have been higher a few months ago, but seems to be hitting the skids prematurely. His range numbers have tanked, indicative of poor conditioning?

We all remember The Catch off the detestable Andy Van Slyke, of course, but my favorite Otis memory is a time in '91 when the Expos beaned him. Standing on first and glaring into their dugout, he said "I will never forget this." Then on 6/16, he stole six bases against them. Pure vindictiveness!

24. Otis Nixon -the anti-Big Cat in body type, playing style, and temperament, but alike in the peripatetic plying of his particular set of skills into his late 30s (the less said about his final year, the better). Rarely hit the ball hard, couldn't throw at all, and yet found a way to provide value

'97 with COL, .318/.389/.585, 41 HR. '98 with ATL, .305/.397/.595, 44 HR. Wasn't quite as dominant after his year off, but in a way even more amazing, adding a dose of inspiration to his already delightful persona. Spread good cheer among the fanbases of several franchises late in his career.

25. Andres Galarraga -You (an ignoramus, hearing the Braves signed 37-year-old Galarraga to a 3-year contract): "The Big Cat! Great signing, he's awesome!" Me (smart): "He's old and Coors inflated his numbers! Prepare for the suck!" And yet, even w/ his year off for cancer treatment, you were right!

He had the additional allure of being a little guy with outrageous gifts in the speed and throwing arm departments. We'd never had a shortstop like him, someone you looked forward to watching field the position. His 130 runs scored in '03 were the most in the 40 years between Murph '83 and Acuna '23

26. Rafael Furcal -through all the ups and downs of the last 50 years, one constant has been the team's willingness to roster both the very young and very old. Furcal was thought to be 19 his rookie year, not the 22 he turned out to be, but the team still gets the credit for taking a chance on him.

I nicknamed him "County", which was short for "Bad Henry County", from whence he came. The Aaron comp quickly faded. By his final season in ATL, I had to join the hoi polloi in the opinion that even his defense was not as impactful as the defensive WAR numbers made it seem. Bad stat, prove me wrong.

27. Jason Heyward -proof that you can study baseball for 50 years and still not fully understand it. To the expert eye, Heyward's swing was never going to fully work, and it must be said that it hasn't. And yet he's carved out a 15-year career as an underpowered corner OF defensive specialist.

Now back for what could have been his managed decline phase -- instead he was worth 9 WAR over the last 3 seasons. Scuffling at the moment, but he can still twirl (sorry, spin) the occasional masterpiece. Now 40, he does not at all resemble the 40-year-olds of yesteryear. Gaylord Perry could never.

28. Charlie Morton -has anyone else in baseball history just kept getting better for 17 years? A frankly mediocre Braves farmhand beginning in '02 who we dumped after a half-season in Atlanta, but who kept working at his craft, peaking with a 3rd place Cy Young finish at age 35 for the Rays in '19.

I'd forgotten what a postseason monster he was for the Braves -- 992 OPS in three NLDS, 994 in four NLCS, and 989 in two WS. That'll do, pig, that'll do.

29. Fred McGriff -gets the mercenary downgrade, but was exactly what the Braves needed at that moment in '93 -- a set-and-forget 1B/cleanup hitter. Played 19 years for 6 teams, but was only in one playoff series for any team besides ATL. A nice, clean stats page as well, which is always satisfying.
