President Biden will sit down Monday for his second TV interview since his faltering debate performance set off concern across the Democratic Party. NBC News anchor Lester Holt will conduct the interview.

One of the most impactful and infuriating algorithms in our lives is the routing algorithm on Google Maps. With 80% market share, it offers us very little control over our routes. If we want better, we will need to support competition like OpenStreetMaps. My latest for NYT Opinion (gift link):

Have to love the self-righteous doofuses who prefer to think that the issue is whether people here are going to desert Biden for Trump, when the problem is that the electoral college count is already plunging toward disaster in the handful of states that will actually decide this thing.

We should of course be wary of overselling the merits of old ways of doing things, but it really would be better if we shifted away from social media and back to blogging.

I'd be shocked if data came back showing a new desire for Biden to step down is a top down phenomenon. Every relatively normal (non political junkie) Dem I talk to, every one, thinks the debate showed Biden needs to step aside. NY Times coverage is annoying, but the debate created this.

From what I see, the internet and the media are all over the place on this, with a wide range of opinions. By contrast, actual real life people I talk to are almost uniformly of the view that he seems too old and will probably lose (even though they will vote for him).

I don't seen how the Dems can win without a candidate who can (1) articulate a clear vision and (2) attack Trump effectively. And right now it doesn't seem like Biden can do either of those.

I would brush off those questions, and then hammer home clearly refined talking points on things like immigration, the economy, and abortion.

I suppose it could have been worse. But I don't understand why Biden doesn't come up with some clear talking points on issues people care about (e.g. the economy, immigration, abortion) and hammer them home regardless of the question. Weakly defending his mental abilities isn't going to help much.

Really? I think he needs to be talking more substance and attacking Trump, and instead he's weakly fending off questions about his capabilities.

20 years ago, the media had a lot more control of the narrative. These days, it's much easier for candidates to talk to the public directly, and it's on them if they don't do it.

A post-debate, New Hampshire poll by St. Anselm:
wmur.com/article/poll...

Trump up 44% to 42% over Biden.
(Biden led by 10% in their last poll, in December.)

54% of those who are aware of the debate say Trump won; 6% say Biden won.
