There is a very painful--& painfully long--rant over on the hellsite from Dave Roberts rn. It's so long I couldn't stay with it. He says he's inarticulate with rage and then pretty much goes on at length to prove it. While I agree with what he says, I don't see a solution. As you say, not up to us.

seems fairly elementary to me if you'll pardon the pun. we engage in shorthand. one assumes that certain early childhood experiences correlate to a certain Weltanschauung. in this case a shared Weltanschauung. but then you already knew that. This shouldn't need spelling out. again, pardon the pun.

I just saw this resumé of events from Ian Dunt. He sounds very optimistic. what Democrats have learned here—from the rare times when they controlled both houses of Congress AND the White House—there's a small window of time–right up front—to get almost everything done. you have to go for it. fast.

Lately I haven't followed UK politics as closely as I used to do. or Italian, Spanish, French, German or miscellaneous Euro countries generally. watching from afar though, I see the same polarization process in play across the entire western hemisphere: rising reactionary populist identity politics.

I'm older; my brothers are older yet. We've found that there's a point where you begin to feel like you've hit a wall. you can still do absolutely everything—easily & for extended periods. you just need more recovery time afterwards. what I hate most about all of this is the shaming, the ridicule.

A minor tradition of mine: a long bike ride on the 4th of July. this year it was a long walk. We've had a long mild spring & early summer. lots of long-lasting flowers this year. today is the last day for them: a scorching heat wave will start burning them all away by tomorrow. enjoy it all now.

I frequently can't find my car in the parking lot & I often get that heart-stopping moment when I panic & think omg this time it's actually been really stolen. but all that ever happens is I get reminded of how small we were making cars in the 70's & the 80's & how totally that's all over now.

non-stop small brush fires all over town and the outskirts of town. up on Skinner Butte last night, 3 fires along the train tracks in the Glenwood area last week and now this fire near I-5 just on the edge of town. at least one was fireworks-related and all these others are undoubtedly human-caused.

Fireworks have been recently banned in Eugene but that didn't stop some yahoos setting off a wildfire on Skinner's Butte late last night with fireworks. Skinner's Butte is a heavily used but small city park right in the heart of the city.

There are many ppl in my area who believe the fires are deliberately set by saboteurs of various stripes. They don't believe it has anything to do with climate change or lightning strikes; they don't even believe in accidental causes. I think it's because they HAVE to disbelieve climate change.

Fire season has already started in Oregon, but it isn't big headlines yet. Just frequent weird stuff like this. Many people in the Valley believe that most or all our fires-& all of our wildfires-are human caused & deliberate sabotage. They blame their favorite leftist group. This news doesn't help.

I remember the day of the fire: it was morning in my time zone & I followed a live video feed of it while I was at work. (I had the kind of job that permitted such things occasionally) It seemed like such a huge deal to me—a devastating event. & none of my co-workers paid the slightest attention.

some things I did during Trump's term in office: focusing on making my own small corner of the world as good as I could make it, isolating myself much more than usual, even being very selfish in some circumstances. I concentrated on my projects & those around me. I don't know if I can do it again.
