When Trump's first campaign was starting, and I mentioned about how people were "acting like Nazis", my friend's husband denied it was possible because the people I was referring weren't from Germany, in total sincerity. I was a "lib that threw that word around without knowing its history".
But even when the parallels are obvious, many find creative ways to deny it. Popular strategy: Comparing the current situation to the final stages of fascism which haven't been reach yet.

I think this is a problem in refusing to educate anyone on exactly what Nazi Germany stood for. Everyone always associates it with simply "jew hate" and nothing more or outside of that. Nobody mentions the violent racism from anti-immigrant attitudes, Nobody mentions the Patriarchial Violence
I think part of the problem is years of nazis being used as stock villains depicted as just "angry yelling guys with flags" without any examination of the ideology in question, to the point where people will call someone a grammar nazi or call a queer person a nazi for being angry and having a flag.
This! When Trump started in 2015 with “Mexicans are murderers & rapists” I told friends creating & demonizing a group of people as an enemy is how fascists rise to power & most thought I was being a bit nutty.

Especially when it's painfully obvious that it's racism even without much of an education on the subject.

All too frequently we do not go back far enough into the history of Nazism. They rose to power due to harsh economic times. Laying ground work, years before by taking advantage of the marginalized and stereo types. Simple people looking for simple answers. No different than the current MAGA.
The Democratic establishment is quite literally just as Fascist as the Republican establishment. You're just self-effacing about it. And that self-effacement is what cost you the election in 2016 and it will invariably lose it for you this cycle as well. I'm convinced you're trying to lose.
Maybe this is just me, but I feel like it's fewer people not recognizing it rather than lots of people who either recognize it and pretend it's not happening (political media), or people who recognize it and support it (Republicans).
