I wouldn't say it's unpredictable, every convention has registration issues every year. It's just at some point it becomes too many people and it's too unmanageable. And then it's the topic of online spaces from everyone not attending.

Anthrocon is usually the one everyone says "has its shit figured out", it's usually the conventions all the others are compared to. I think at some point we need to recognize that it's just a fuckton of people attending these conventions vs a handful of volunteers.

In "Lest Darkness Fall" (L. Sprague deCamp), a "Connecticut Yankee" type novel where Modern (1940s) Dude goes back to Roman Times, there's this bit. Book was written in the late 40s or early 50s. Those types have been around a long time.

COVID especially jacked up the materials cost, and the. They never went down again. I only did it for premades and I've pretty much stopped entirely- it's not worth the cost.
