I actually love that the Maxwell House Haggadah began in 1932 as a marketing campaign to educate people that coffee isn’t kitniyot.
Marketing? Indeed.
Public education? You bet!
High quality Jewish ritual item that’s endured? Dang skippy.
Do something so well it transcends its original purpose.
The first time I saw one (in a roomie's Passover care package at college) I was struck by the marketing photo inside, the family enjoying coffee around their Seder table. It was the only time I'd ever seen an ad with all brown-haired people in it. Blonde-normativity in American advertising is real 😅
Today, while scrubbing the stove, I had a whole internal conversation about whether or not it makes sense that coffee beans are okay for Pesach, and it did not occur to me that Maxwell House had already done that work for me, despite MANY Maxwell House seders. Thanks for sharing this!
One of the things I did as an undergrad was find and collect these (amongst other ephemera) for my college library as they were building out resources for the Jewish studies section. They delighted me, then and now.
It created a unified default reference, solidifying tradition and making a new one.
The things to be said do not benefit from leather bindings and gilt edges; they benefit from being available to all.
10 years ago, as the only Jew in my MBA program (of about 150 students) I managed to get a stack of maxwell house haggadah books for my classmates to learn about passover. Not a lot of Jews in central Pennsylvania, I guess.
My herbal tea drinking eventual vegan mother would serve Maxwell House to guests (&, of course, Sanka for the decaf drinkers) pretty much because of the Haggadah. Plus it was the coffee of choice at all 3 synagogue/shul/temple(s) we attended (long story).
We found a whole bunch of these (more recent than 1932!) In our community rooms in prep for our communal seder and I don't think they're so common in the UK so I had no idea why they existed. Thank you for that knowledge!
Absolutely fascinating! Both the background for the custom and the genius marketing campaign. I like days that begin with learning about something interesting all thanks to the Internet and its endless supply on information.
I am currently disappointed that I haven’t been able to find any in the grocery store. We used Maxwell House for 2nd night last year and the translations in the new version I had shipped to my brother are so much better than those in the family collection I ended up with!
