Good thread. I reposted this from the middle because I feel like this is an important point. I struggle with despair and feeling helpless. No one can save the world on their own. But we can each do a little bit to make things better.

I had a friend who worked for the AKC for a while. They’re just paper pushers. No one is checking that the registered dogs are what the papers say they are, or that they even exist.

The only species of penguins in the Northern Hemisphere (and just barely!) are the equatorial Galapagos penguins, which are the 2nd smallest penguin species on Earth. They're just these little guys.

Challenge: cisticolas. Small, drab tan birds, over 50 species, many can only be identified by their call. And you’re in Africa and the bird guide is telling you to ignore the giraffes to pay attention to these sparrow like birds you can only get a glimpse of. Friend, I ignored the cisticolas

I quite rarely post charities, but this is one I've backed for years. Sarah does a *ton* of work getting scientists to do virtual visits with K-12 classrooms. It's a great way to get across that science is an ongoing thing. She's also the force behind the squid/bugs/crab facts hotlines.

I really have lost my former tolerance for "we're doomed/fucked/it's all over/they've won" takes at this point, in that they're the most dangerous attitudes one could possibly have when confronted with a truly existential political threat (which we still DO have levers to address).

When teaching biochemistry I had a bonus question asking students to name their favorite amino acid and why. I still remember the student who said Arrrrgginine and drew a 🏴‍☠️. He got the extra credit.
