Fixing a small part of the problem(s), and making it easier to fix the rest, is good! But don't oversell it.

Doesn't really fix either, but still a good idea. * Modern mapping tools can gerrymander so much better, this helps but doesn't even get us back to 2010. * Main problem with EC isn't malapportionment (which this mostly fixes), but winner-take-all (which it doesn't).

If you are mad at the NYT and don't feel like fucking with the auction today, I also invite you to just go directly to donate.romancingthevote.com which is where all of our auction payments will go, and from there directly on to voting organizations who will make sure those who WANT to vote can.

Anyway: I hope your Independence Day is joyful, but I hope far more that as Americans we all make our voices heard LOUD AND CLEAR this November 5th. No to King Trump. Yes to whoever best opposes him. And today, fuck the New York Times.

OK — I'll admit, that model isn't as clean as the selfishly-rational-individual one that makes voting a paradox. But my point is, voting makes sense as collective action, not individual action. (Thus: the kinds of voting methods that make the most sense are built on proportional representation.)

In this model, if you vote for a winning candidate, the chance that your vote was the marginally-pivotal one that puts your candidate over the top is still exactly 1/N where N is the number of voters for that candidate; but the ex ante utility of committing not to break the chain is far higher.

So if you, standing somewhere in line, suddenly decided not to vote, the votes from people ahead of you would already be cast; but those from people behind you would be left up in the air.

In this (overly-simplified and unrealistic, but still revealing) model, each voter in that line is voting *because* the person in front of them is; and in turn, they are the *cause* for the person behind them voting.

Obviously, some people have broader direct influence, but in a large enough group, the average number of people *directly* influenced by a given individual is about 1. With dash of Rawlsian ignorance and of Von Neumann-Morgenstern utility, the simplified model is just a queue, as in the image above.

You are influenced by others, and you influence them in turn. Your free will, in that case, can be seen as a choice whether to break the chain.

How does an individual relate to a larger group — a party, or movement, or nation? By being influenced by others, and by influencing others in turn. OK, so if the Downsian paradox of voting is built on the mathematical model of individual rationality, let's build as rigorous a model of movements.

The "Responses" section of the article begin to chip away at the edges of the paradox: voting may have expressive, altruistic, or other collateral benefits. But to crack this argument at its core, recognize how individual action is part of a collective. (Wake up. New(ish) argument incoming.)

This is known as the Paradox of Voting, and given the assumptions, the math is unassailable: voting isn't worth it.

But that wikipedia article doesn't just lay out the paradox; it also carries the seeds of its Downs fall.

...you view yourself as an individual, with no influence from or on any others, and no stake in what happens to them. In that case, "how everyone else will vote" might as well be preordained, if unknown. The chance my vote will swing it is miniscule; the expected value to me, proportionally tiny.

The main argument is: > “Why does anyone vote?” I ask myself. The answer cannot be that we believe that by doing so, we will influence the outcome of an election. My vote, were it not withheld, would have no such effect. Which... actually makes sense. But only IF...

I don't subscribe, so I've just read the first 6 paragraphs available on Internet Archive. But that's more than enough to get the tone of the piece: self-congratulations, with an undertone of snide trolling. As others have pointed out, you can tell this is a straight cis white guy without checking.

The <censored> New York Times has chosen this particular 4th of July — less than a week after 6 unelected judges bindingly ruled that monarchy is great after all — to publish an editorial against voting. My first response is RAGE. But OK, let's do this: here's why they're so so wrong:

5/5 If Biden decides to withdraw, he should just say something like, "Being president is a full-time job. Campaigning for the presidency is a full-time job. I'm too old to work two jobs, so I'm going to focus on the one I was elected to do. Vote Harris in November!"

Agree with all of this but also: 1. Walk and chew gum. Address direct needs while you do the structural stuff. 2. Show good faith before statehood referendum in PR. Repeal Jones act for island states/territories; disappear 90% of the debt; and offer to assume remaining 10% if statehood passes.

(I put scare quotes on "legally" because, though the Trump v. US decision is so badly-written it's unclear, it's probably actually just "with impunity" but that's effectively the same thing.)

In the mid/long run, that obviously means ending the filibuster, expanding SCOTUS, DC statehood, etc. But worth a few quicker symbolic actions, too. Releasing Trump's tax returns (one at a time, over weeks) would prove they're serious, and serve the public's valid right to know.

The "haha he should use seal team 6" takes are pure fantasy. But this one seems like unequivocally a good idea. Not really escalation given <expansive gesture> but also would signal he sees that it's not the moment for "when they go low we go high".

Voting method reform is like #6 on the US "urgent structural reforms" list and like #15 for "urgent reforms, including groups in crisis". But it's the issue where I have some degree of comparative advantage so I'm hereby resolving to actually write up my shit.

OK, so I guess this is the real Flight 93 election. Now or never, do or die. (And spare me any self-gratifying "but Biden sucks too".) Serious thing to consider: If you can, move to a swing state in time to legally register there. Obviously, most can't. But even a few might swing it. Do or die.

Still thinking about this. Judge Chutkan and the DC Cir. have one of the few opportunities anyone is going to get to pare back yesterday’s decision. They have to respond in a way that forces SCOTUS to either back down or completely humiliate themselves. What they CANNOT do …

* Not immediately lead to excessive, disruptive party fragmentation. (More than 2 parties is good. 7+ tiny slivers, none of which has >30%, isn't.)

Such a pro-rep system is possible to design. Here's how I'd do it. But the point there is to show it's possible, not to nail down every detail.
