A new program from NSF is targeting graduate fellowship money to people who received Honorable Mention on a GRFP within the past three years, who are currently enrolled in grad school in EPSCoR states.

Uh, why is this surprising? We've known for decades that monocultures of bacteria need to be measured within minutes of each other to be comparable, because microbial growth is fast and resources change quickly.

Another point about the journal "Applied and Environmental Microbiology" - if you review more than 5 papers a year - you'll be automatically considered for the editorial board after a few years - early career folks at #ASMicrobe make sure we know who you are - there's a quick path to recognition!
