Senator Ron Wyden

@wyden.senate.gov

I'm well aware of how China and other foreign governments can purchase huge amounts of our private data from data brokers. That's why I have a bill that would take a more effective approach by regulating and preventing the export of Americans' data to high-risk foreign countries.

Please author legislation to ban opaque algorithms of all social media. Not knowing the biases of our news sources, especially when controlled by foreign rivals, is more dangerous than mere data collection (though the latter can be used for political micro-targeting).

We need rigorous privacy legislation restricting the collection of the data. You'll never be able to stop them from getting it through brokers

How about banning the sale of the data completely. I don’t care if it’s China, Palenter, or my life insurance company. They can find other sources of income.

Would that bill prevent an ad or marcom agency from taking on CCP-affiliates as a customer? Or even a u.s. based independent contractor from purchasing the data and using it for influence campaigns that originate in the u.s.?

I like the idea of banning the bad practice (transferring personal data of citizens to hostile countries) 100% better than banning an app. I think it doesn't go far enough. Ban all data transfer without specific authorization from the citizens whose data is to be transferred.

Why just ‘high risk’ countries? Let’s protect personal data by banning the sale of it entirely. Our phones, cars, email, any app you might install to do normal things like communicate or banking etc, is all harvesting personal data. Please put a stop to this.

How bout you do your job and prevent domestic companies from selling my data and give me some actual privacy in law? The EU has done it, so why not us?

Instead of banning a company for foreign ownership reasons how about just focusing on all apps that violate our privacy? I see you have a bill for that, why can't that be the focus?

All well and good but the whole privacy and national security concerns are just the smoke screen and not the main reason behind the want for the ban itself

Thank you Senator. A “ban” on TikTok is ridiculous on its face and the sale to more right wing billionaires so they can turn it into another X (Twitter) is even more ridiculous. Everyone sells our data without our knowledge. Fix that so we can become internet citizens and not internet victims.

Everybody is selling our data. We all know it. We DONT NEED a TikTok ban. Vote no on that please. We need your strong federal privacy bill. I hope you can get it over the finish line. P.S. Could you please tell your colleagues to come on over to Bluesky? 😀

How stupid is this. Every well-funded social media data can be purchased anywhere in the World. The United States does its fair share. Don’t take all Americans for fools. Call your Senators and ask them to kill this Bill.

How banning the collection and sale of all private data, or mandate that all data collection must be an explicit opt-in with quarterly disclosure is on who is gets the data? Wonder if a market would open up for a $1.99/mo nav app that doesn't collect personal data. Only non location telemetry.

Would like the US to also be put on the list of 'high-risk foreign countries' considering how much the US violates user privacy while also profitting off our data. We won't be able to deal with foreign adversaries if our own representatives and government profit off of doing the same.

Isn't part of the issue that China can influence the TikTok algorithm to influence public opinion (there is evidence it already does), and that in the event of a crisis they could really ramp that up and cause great damage. Privacy legislation won't solve that (although still great to have)

i care far far more, orders of magnitude more about my government and exploitative american companies having my personal data than China. What is China going to do to me if I post #FreeHongKong #FreeTaiwan? Nothing. On the other hand, American orgs are making lists of Palestine supporters.

It needs to be banned from the beginning. As long as "data brokers" exist, our data will end up in the hands of anyone who wants it. No honest person even starts a business like that.

Put a surgeon general like warning on all social media that takes up 1/2 the screen that says “your humanity means nothing to us, you are meat sacks that supply our algorithms with data that we will use for whatever we like no matter how much damage it causes, we create nothing but take everything.”

How about, instead of this nonsense, you ban the trading of any and all private data unless informed and un-forced consent. Yes, that includes decimating all the credit reporting companies too.
