"You wouldn't use air conditioning if you care about the environment" is just the new "You'd recycle your plastic if you cared about the environment." Both purposely default to individual responsibility as the cure when the real issue is industries & companies. It's. a. distraction. It always is.
Climate Change things that work: EVs, public transit, heat pumps, wind, solar, and batteries
Climate change things that are distractions: everything else
To your point, a big part of this is design. Modern homes are designed to use ac when it's hot. We could design homes that are less demanding of that system, and that's an issue for the homebuilders.
It's a good analogy, because most plastic waste is commercial packaging and tire erosion from heavier vehicles, and we as a society decided to annoy consumers who forget carrier bags at supermarkets and straws used (with plastic-lined disposable cups) now rapidly dissolve on contact with liquid
I have a small solar array and air conditioning which keeps my house warm without ANY fossil fuels, not even burning wood smoke and consequent air pollution CO2. As much as possible I adjust drapes to catch sunlight and heat my house internals in the daylight.
I am positively 100% for this, but it's not wrong to tell people to recycle. And yes, I am aware that individuals recycling is only a small part of the solution. But it IS part of the whole solution.
The amount of plastic and energy huge companies use in just an hour is terrifyingly massive. Our individual impacts on the environment in terms of consumption are NOTHING compared to theirs.
Or Captain Planet telling us to turn off lights as we leave the room when the gigantic office skyscraper next door leaves every single light on “because it makes the city look pretty at night”
Yeah, like fucking BP: "Watch your carbon footprint! Drive less! Use less AC! Cut your plastic use! What do you mean, 'what about Deepwater Horizon'? Never heard of it, PLEASE don't look at the Gulf of Mexico-"
My grandmother's 93 and, in order to keep her house below eighty degrees in the Texas summer, the AC runs from dawn till dusk all summer long. Fuck anybody who wants to tell me otherwise.
I'm not saying we all don't collectively need to be responsible for what we put into, take out of, and do with the world. But I'm so tired of the shaming and "celebs in private jets are the real problem" armchair activists.
