I held a woman’s hand while she burst into tears and walked me through a patch of grass and dirt where her ancestors were buried, the same spot these petrochemical companies want to build a new plant. The people who live there, mostly Black people of course, are being sacrificed to industry.

No one goes outside from 4-6PM because the smell is everywhere, like burning tires and mustard hanging thick in the air. I smelled it. I saw the flares from the burning stacks, and the storage containers sitting 300 feet back from someone’s backdoor.

I was just in St. James Parish, LA interviewing local residents about the overwhelming pollution in Cancer Alley. I don’t think most people understand how bad it is. I didn’t.

And to avoid any doubt, Hamas's kidnapping of Argamani, Ziv, Kozolov and Meir from the Nova party was a war crime. Holding them hostage for eight months was a war crime. They should have been released unconditionally. 4/

Even worse are those analysts who welcomed the 7th of October as expanding the "imaginary for possibilities of both resistance and collective freedom". Carried away by images of destroyed border fences, they ignored both the nature of the attack and its totally predictable consequence.

A reminder: Israel bears full responsibility for its campaign of total destruction of the Gaza Strip. But Hamas's 7th Oct attack was a reckless gamble which - so far - brought unprecedented disaster. Any analysis that omits Hamas's agency and responsibility, is not worth the paper it's written on.

It’s unethical that COVID is frequently left out of conversations about public transport accessibility. Many disabled and higher risk people haven’t been able to access public transport for years due to the lack of masks and clean air. This is a huge equity issue.

Lots of advertising over on the other side about Switzerland's regulatory environment allowing big pharma to thrive. Not a shred of evidence for a link between profits and innovation, neither on the enormous cost to the taxpayer, insurance premiums, and all people in need of medication.

Nine years ago today, May 24, author Tanith Lee died from breast cancer. She wrote in a plethora of genres and stories. From sword and sorcery to cyberpunk, and from vampire fiction--both Gothic and sci-fi--to dark fairy-tales, she made a name for herself. Time for her resurgence.

Shortly after the 7th of October emerged an Israeli Hasbara message of "The West is Next". I found it an interesting slogan because it said that Israel wasn't, in fact, part of the West. But also, it's not part of the "East" either. Then what is it, exactly?

There isn't a single Jewish organisation that does not have some kind of connection to Israel that would make it Zionist and boycott-able. Yes, even JVP has been called "Zionist". Unless you have clear guidelines that explain what you mean by "Zionist", it very easily becomes "Jews" 1/

For the Israeli right wing, the emergence of a credible Palestinian leadership is a threat as it could lead to statehood. That's why the split Gaza/West Bank was so useful, that's why they sponsored Hamas's rule, that's why they wouldn't discuss alternatives to Hamas in Gaza. 1/

Hillel is the organization on campuses where Jewish students eat, pray, and gather together. Calling for a university to cut ties with Hillel is explicitly antisemitic. Not even a close call.

My — lefty, activist, pro-Palestinian freedom — synagogue got vandalized by anti-Zionists for eschewing any official stance (pro *or* anti) re: Israel rather than being explicitly anti-Zionist and I truly cannot think of a more glaring example of horizontal violence

Professor Nadera Shalhoub Kevorkian was arrested and is held overnight, for things she said on a podcast a few weeks ago. In an environment in Israel of daily, constant genocidal discourse against Palestinians, this is preposterous.
