I think of this as the intersection where palliation can increase the possibilities of healing through the alleviation of suffering. We can sometimes die while we work on eradicating an illness We can sometimes focus on alleviating suffering and end up creating the conditions for cure Both/and

Your learning stance. If the world is changing fast, what you've known won't always be enough, and you can't know yet what you will need to know. But you can call up the learning part of yourself. Try stuff, see what happens. Dust off your journal, think aloud, compare notes.

Clarity about vision and values. When you don't know what's coming you can still know what you stand for and where you are trying to go. You can have your compass ready when rapid change and destabilization might spin you around.

Even when time feels short, when you are worried and uncertain, you can find ways to slow your pace, to listen, to be curious, to offer help or ask for it. You won't know which connections will "matter" in whatever comes next, but more connections means more options to respond.

The connections between us - our world is fractured and that limits collective intelligence and adaptive capacity. Whatever you need to do today you can do in a way that helps create the conditions for connections to grow.

Health of key systems - what can you do to keep yourself healthy, rested, nourished? What about your watershed, your community center, the pollinators, the healers? There are so many ways health is being eroded, but also ways to bolster it up. Be a bolster where you can.

In moments of uncertainty I like to think about "good bets" -- choices and actions that seem most likely to be helpful no matter what comes next. Here are a few on my mind. What would you add?

In what ways can those organized around love and community, sufficiency and ecology, find advantages vs structures of consolidated power, under conditions of destabilization? No answers from me, but I think these are good questions.

Don't leave environmental collapse out of your analysis of democracy collapse. Some questions: - to what degree has premonitions of ecological collapse led to these power grabs? - to what degree will these power grabs accelerate ecological collapse?

I agree. The feeling you mention isn't new to me. I try to listen to those who have been surviving. And, as best I can tell, being in community is the basis for strategies and surviving, and some of us don't have real community and it takes skill and practice and time to be in healthy community.

When the empty ugliness at the centers of power becomes clear to you, if that is a sharp, new, devastating feeling, a good thing to do is to follow the instructions of those far from centers of power who have been seeing, surviving, strategizing & surviving for a long, long time.

All of it is tiny. But also all of it can only be done by me. That talk, that meeting, those seeds. Someone else will do another talk, but not that talk. Not that particular weird accidental hybridization of spinach varieties, adapted to this valley, last year's weather.

Also on the plan, deliberately, care for the system of me - not a luxury, but an investment for tumultuous times. I will exercise. I will drink lots of water. I will read for pleasure and for new ideas. I will cook a simple dinner and eat it with my husband on the porch.

Doing nothing because you can't do everything, saying nothing because you aren't on CNN, that leaves you feeling small and powerless and misses opportunities to add droplets of change to a complex system.

Paralysis and overwhelm don't disrupt dangerous systems. That's one reason I believe even little actions that disrupt domination patterns and support life-sustaining patterns are important. Not because of their size but because of their direction.

Even for those who currently have no medical vulnerabilities, or who don’t mask regularly, wearing a mask should be as simple as using an umbrella when it rains or a bandage when you’re bleeding. You can protect yourself from flu season or smoke, or others from your cold. Easy, practical, courteous.
