You can describe a lot of what's wrong with the U.S. right now by the idea that elites being held accountable for breaking the law is seen in elite circles as bad.

I’m reading a Jane Jacobs book which has a whole chapter about this as one of the primary threats to our civilization!

something that stands out for me here is how much they're mad about this guy enforcing rules — against drunk driving, against phone use — that mostly exist to, like, save these people from themselves rich guy melting down that someone told him to just learn how to turn on bluetooth

I don't think it's so much that these folks are car-brained, although that is a subcategory of the outrage we often see over elite accountability. The Post and some Sag Harbor Residents would have zero problem with poor people of color being pulled over by the cops for any reason.

This is 100% behind the elite backing trump. and its also an endorsement of Biden's presidency (and an indictment of Obama not doing all that he could). They are mad as hell democratic governance is trying, at the smallest levels to treat the rich as accountable to laws.

That Frank Wilhoit thing ("conservatism consists of one proposition, to wit: there must be out-groups that the law binds but does not protect, alongside in-groups that the law protects but does not bind") explains SO much, even among people who don't claim to be conservative

More than just thinking it's bad, they're genuinely shocked, and don't seem to grasp that everyone wouldn't be as outraged by it as they are.

By organs that normally are "back the blue" Cops shooting Black people who haven't done anything wrong? Fine. Cops stopping rich people who have broken the law? To the barricades!
