Over the last two years, I've witnessed a lot of vile behaviour. There is absolutely no reason to be punching down, or letting your anxiety get the better of you and deciding it's "grants vs scholarships/fellowships". We can acknowledge yesterday's step was crucial AND that there's much more to fix.

If you have power in this system (PIs, I mean you) please DO NOT send hateful, patronizing, or generally rude messages to SOS. Especially not to the grad students and postdocs (who do this work for free).
We unequivocally support increased funding for grants. We're on the same side.

SOS has taken up a significant portion of my life over the last 2 years. Today feels surreal. I'm so goddamn happy to know everyone who comes after me will be paid more & I hope it inspires others to fight for change - there was nothing special about us, besides how hard-headed and focused we were.

We are deeply disappointed that graduate students and postdoctoral scholars were not included in today's Fall Economic Statement.
Without investments, Canada will continue to fail its most vulnerable researchers #SupportOurScience

Yup.
And I believe nihilism appeals to lazy progressive, because it simultaneously allows them to demonstrate an awareness and appreciation of progressive values, but doesn't actually require them to DO anything to enable those values.

My landlord sent a cleaner to my place today and she arrived wearing 3 surgical masks. I gave her an N95 to wear and, before she left, I gave her 3 boxes of N95s and told her how much more they protect than baggy blues.
If you need N95s, you can get them free in 🇨🇦 from @donatemask.bsky.social.

When you see a peer-reviewed scientific journal article, it often says “pay $35 to read this.”
Did you know that $0 of that goes to the authors of the article?
Just email us and we’ll be happy to send you a copy for free. We’re usually thrilled that anyone cares. 🧪🦑🦈

This past week I got to do field work everyday! Which is the first time since 2019 I’ve spent a good amount of time in a marsh.
It was great to be back and also I forgot how hard moving in wetlands can be 😅

I hope that anyone who has ever felt they need to put up with a toxic environment because "the work is worth it" learns that it isn't. It never is. You can do so much more when you are safe, and there is freedom on the other side.
