Morning, Bluesky. Labourโs first Cabinet meeting is underway with a Starmer press conference afterwards.
One interesting factor for me is three experts who were given ministerial jobs: Covid star Sir Patrick Vallance as Science minister, James Timpson at Prisons and Richard Hermer attorney general.
Itโs interesting, have heard a few stories from work networks about academic expertise contacted during the campaign for advice and possible future input. Of course thatโs not going to be possible for long if the UKHE sector collapses, but a bit more encouraging than the โbored of expertsโ bunch.
I saw a headline in which Starmer is reported to have said the UK wonโt rejoin Europe in his lifetime. I am going to look for the article (it may have been in The Guardian), but that seems off. I know it will take quite some time, but it sounds discouraging.
oh. actual experts. That's always nice.
our batshit insane cartoon villain party is not fond of experts. if the military and economic collapse don't get us, bird flu from the raw milk drinkers and food poisoning from no more FDA could do the job! Yay!
Theyโll all need to be made Lords to serve. But it will cause some internal pressure - three plum jobs that arenโt going to MPs.
And Emily Thornberry was the Shadow AG so sheโs lost out.
But it looks like a very good move to me. Quick way to get ahead of a brief.
Still slightly in shock at how fast things have turned around.
The week started with the continuing Tory omnishambles, it's now the weekend and we have an actual government.
Shouldn't be so surprised, Starmer ran DPP & ran it effectively, he know how to get shit done. But still ....
always thought Timpson must be an Excellent Chap. What great appts so far.

So refreshing to see jobs being given to people who know WTAF they're talking about.
Can I suggest Martin Lewis as Chief secretary to the Treasury? Chris Packham and Fergal Sharkey at Environment, Rivers and Waterway?
An interesting one for me is that he's looking at putting Nick Boles, a former Tory minister, into a role in planning.
I think it's a good idea, because it shows that Starmer isn't frightened of seeking cross party consensus
.
Though obv Boles wasn't rabid enough for today's Tory Party.
Wow. Timpson at prisons is huge, a prison system that treats prisoners like people and tries to rehabilitate them would be a massive step forward. I hope he gets the resources he needs to make meaningful changes. Wow.
I am all for having experts, but with over 400 MPs, this seems pretty insulting that NONE of them are qualified to take these ministries. A minister shouldnt need to be an expert, just a good manager. I'm Australian, and the house of lords is just such a weird idea.
