I do, every Xmas: family in Palm Springs. Camped in Death Valley for the big millennium NYE, and it was a very pleasant temp! City tour dates are mid-May to mid-Nov; picking summer dates as top choices was my strategy to increase my odds of getting a slot this year (no dice last year) - it worked.

Yesterday’s tour was supposed to be an afternoon tour (4:30-7:30pm), right up until last Tuesday, the afternoon before a federal holiday, when I got a nervous voicemail asking if we’d be OK with moving the tour to dawn so we wouldn’t die

There’s a lot to critique about City — this Hyperallergic piece did a good job — but it was an awe-inspiring experience and I’m so glad I could do it (and bring a dear friend with me): being outdoors, in my body, in the moment, immersed in something bigger than me.

City is unnatural yet in nature, which is making the site its own and will do so for ages. Pungent sagebrush surrounds City. We saw birds, mice, hares, antelope. A coyote running by the road; a vulture on the wing. Big black beetles, the remains of scorpions. Joshua trees along the highway to Vegas.

The site is big, a mile and a half across. You feel tiny in it, ephemeral. It’s the product of half a century’s work by dozens of workers and its creator. He’s now too old and ill to visit it—the elevation disagrees with him—but it will outlast him, and me, and you.

Visited Michael Heizer’s City today in a remote part of Nevada, not far from Area 51. We arrived before dawn to avoid the record heat; the rising sun cast changing shadows on the curves & angles of the site. It was silent but for the crunch of gravel underfoot and the occasional lowing of cattle.

What this article leaves out is that if you hand your unlocked phone to a police officer, they can legally search it. Unless companies develop a method that allows you to show officers insurance cards and driver license without unlocking the rest of your phone, don't.

I’m not even saying “joy is an act of resistance” or “don’t despair, act,” etc., I’m just saying it is physically not feasible. “You must stay super freaked out or you’re not taking things seriously” is no more helpful than “you must view photos of atrocities to prove you’re taking them seriously.”

Reminder: it is not doable to maintain a state of abject terror 24/7, so when your attention turns to something else, it doesn’t mean you’re sticking your head in the sand about the future. Right now, at this moment, you are (probably, if you’re reading this) safe, and your mind & body need a break.

At SF Pride, and I just had to explain to two teens complaining about the creepy nuns who the SISTERS OF PERPETUAL INDULGENCE are. They’re a queer community service group that dress up like nuns. They cared for AIDS patients when no one else would. They’ve earned respect in the community.

The young man had this tiny coin purse printed with pictures of Chihuahuas and Papillons. Like a little girl’s coin purse. I said what on earth can you fit in there, it is too small for a phone, so he opened it up to show me. The purse contained one (1) item and it was: poppers

Apropos of nothing other than the judiciary seizing the right to second guess all of federal administrative and regulatory rule making, I note that there are currently 46 vacant federal judgeships, 27 of which don’t even have a nominee. 🤷‍♂️
