When I learned this (at some point when I worked at Vox), I became an anti-debate truther. I don’t know why we put ourselves through this, short of giving the political press something to obsess over for a few days.
I watched 1st one for Clinton v. Dole in HS. I thought it so boring & everyone in my area of the US seemed to already have made their decision by the time of the 1st debate. The major papers in my state & neighboring ones as well showed polls didn't change by more than 1 - 2%. Debates are pointless.
When you realize the vast majority of shit that happens before Labor Day (and arguably before Columbus Day) in a presidential election just does not matter, you, too, will spend every fourth summer in blissful oblivion.
It is a circus and the lying clowns are entertaining. Enjoy it while you can.
After all when Trump wins there would be no more debates
Or elections, for that matter.
This one might.
I truly believe the biggest question coming into tonight was whether Biden has still has the optics of a world leader. I think that has gone very poorly.
I'm not going to say I don't enjoy listening to some of the punditry. But this is reassuring. I definitely think we've moved past (for better or for worse) the era where sweaty Nixon hurt him vs. JFK.
Oh I think you answered your own question, there! (Not that I have to tell you that.) It's just made-for-tv bullshit; "content" for the bullshit cable channels that constantly need it.
In the modern time it's largely irrelevant.
It needs to be treated like the stage show it is. Make a few good sound bites for headlines in the following days. THAT is what undecided voters might see.
Dems do that TERRIBLY. Such bad media advisors.
Obsess over? What’s really going on: trash content to glue people’s eyes to their networks so they can claim numbers to sell advertising slots at as high a price as possible. The only motive for capitalist “news” media is making profit on pushing ads. They’ve no loyalty to truth or country.
It’s so pointless. It rewards people who are good debaters and have confidence, it’s just vibes based. They could have a dance battle and it would be equally as useful.
It was probably more useful back in the day when you had fewer sources of info on candidates and their platforms, but these days it never actually provides anyone with info they don't already know
Yep. I don't watch them; never have and never will. They are pure spectacle, the worst kind of politics-as-sporting-event, and they lack even internal integrity and value. I like a politician who can capably state their positions, but the TV debates are such nonsense I don't even want to judge THAT.
