i was staring at a menu that was in sicilian with the italian underneath each item and my brain preceived the sicialian as italian and the italian as english (it's food, it's mostly familiar) and then... oh! right!

One thing I don't think Americans understand is just how small and incestuous the British ruling class is. There's like 7000 people across politics and the media and certain kinds of business and think tank, who all went to the same universities, who are all married to each other.

Seems odd that a well-known UK journo turning out to be an actual fascist, proven in a court of law, doesn't make the news, but hey.

Never forget Keir Starmer paraded Brianna Ghey's mother around Parliament to score points over Sunak. 5 months later he's saying trans women aren't women + should be banned from women's spaces. It's utterly depressing come tomorrow there will be people inc. from many queers endorsing him as PM.

like the ethos of "respectable" DC is completely lawyer brained which approves of making convincing arguments you don't believe. that's not necessarily lying, precisely, but it isn't good faith discussion either!

also related - people who demand you treat obvious bad faith liars (DC is filled with people who are PAID TO LIE IT IS THEIR JOB) as if they are operating in good faith.

The worst ones are like political science profs who spend years lecturing The Left about how Republicans are Fine and Good Actually and people should be Civil and Not Shrill and Engage In The Marketplace of Ideas then one day wake up and demand everyone is outraged as they suddenly are

The wild thing about this is that Starmer, once the top lawyer in the UK, is just plain wrong about this. The equality act is clear about this and there are multiple examples of case law stating exactly that trans women have the right to use single-sex spaces aligning with their gender identity.

generally I wish people would explain whether they are worried biden comes across badly sometimes because of age or if his brain is mush because of age - is the election campaign the problem or the governing? (I am not expressing an opinion here, just pointing out that these are different issues!)
