A squire rushed in to the great hall.

"Someone," he shouted, "has taken the sword from the stone!"

The assembled knights halted their dinner.

"At last, a king?"

"Who?"

"I don't know," the squire said. "The sword is gone!"

Elsewhere:
"This," Indy muttered, "belongs in a museum.

There is a 7 foot tall guy behind Rishi Sunak who likely ran for office just to be able to hold a printed out L behind him during his concession speech.

The cool thing is that the plural is famuli, so you can say to the lab group that everyone there is a part of your famuli (putting on a Dominic Toretto voice of course) and people will *think* you are saying family, when you are actually calling them servants.

I came across a new old word today in the trivia calendar my wife gave me for Christmas. Famulus. I think this is a good one to use for any PhD students working for you.

One of the most head-spinning but largely unchallenged fossil industry lies in Australia is a monthly "warning" issued that there's a "gas shortage" which requires a million new gas fields to be opened up. More gas is burned *just to process gas exports* than is used domestically in manufacturing.

Out of curiousity I looked up the history. It looks like fun fireworks came first and then more seriously inclined people had a good long think about what would happen if you stuck the fun explody powder in a tube with a heavy ball on top and pointed it at something you wanted to put holes in.

I read an urban fantasy novel called Kraken by China Mieville where (spoiler, but not a major one to the plot) one of the characters has created a transporter and is haunted by the ghosts of all his previous selves who used it.

New study by Linsey Marr:

“We aerosolized SARS-CoV-2 & pulled it through masks. After 1hr we were able to recover infectious virus from fabric masks but not an N95 or surgical mask. When we pressed artificial skin against the masks we found viral RNA but no infectious virus on the skin.” #MasksWork

I have lowered my demands of political leadership from "actually help us" to "actually watch whatever you're trying to reference". I know, in my heart of hearts, that a better world isn't possible but I think, if we all sacrifice and bleed for it, they CAN finish a movie that came out 40 years ago.

They should go with Biden being like the wise sea captain from Moby Dick and Trump is the white whale. I’ve heard good things about that book so I’m sure the analogy is relevant.

Sometimes I think about when I was a kid and milk was delivered in reusable glass bottles by people driving electric vehicles. That is the sort of distribution system we should have now, never mind 40 years ago.

I was a little sad to leave Twitter as I met my wife on there back in 2012, but we both found that BlueSky offered an experience very similar to Twitter of that period while X offered an experience similar to being tied to a chair with your eyes forced open and Nazi propaganda run 24x7.

They dropped all of Star Trek Prodigy S2 on Netflix the other day. 20 new episodes of Star Trek. Yes, it's a kids' cartoon. If you can get past the first 5 episodes of the 1st season it's also good Star Trek. Some Star Trek series took a lot longer than 5 episodes to find their footing.

Fired* from my job as a party truck driver. Sweet gig. I'd rent a box truck from U-Haul, fill the back with balloons, toss the party goers in, and race around. Swerving, taking corners real fast, whooping over speed bumps... A lot of people were badly injured. *Arrested by Health and Human Services

Next time you should wrap the box completely in plastic. This should reduce the number of complaints and reported injuries. Also witnesses.

Hey, did you all know that if you click on the screen during a Teams presentation it can pause the on-screen presentation just for you? I didn’t. I sat for 15 minutes listening to the presenter discuss new topics and wondering why I was watching the same animation keep replaying over and over.

I was so lucky to be among the last group of students to get a free uni education. I came from a family living in council housing estates and it really made a difference to my life - I know I wouldn’t have gone otherwise. Many of my younger relatives don’t even see uni as an option.

I last read her books back in 2007 when the Deathly Hallows came out. I thought the story was fairly basic but still seemed to be teaching the target audience to question authority and fight fascism. I liked that she seemed to actually want to pay taxes back then too. Sad to see the obvious descent.
