Watching the Tour de France, which I actually really like as it’s a pleasant French travel documentary with lots of cool aerial shots concealed as a sporting event

The bicycle-themed land art made by farmers along the route is always nice.

It may be the best sporting event to attend. It’s anywhere from a few seconds to an hour or so of watching and cheering for the riders but it’s hours of connecting with people from all over the world and experiencing the local culture.

Yup. Watching the Tour de France is as wonderful as watching an aquarium full of exotic fish going over 40km/h.

This is the best description of pretty much all cycling coverage - hours of landscape photography with a couple minutes of frantic sporting stuff. My second favorite part is that these are all like actual places you can actually go. Unlike watching baseball - They’ll never let me pitch at Fenway

My favorite parts are when the commentators are like, “this castle was built in 1547 and this town is best known for [insert obscure delicacy].”

When you watch it in Britain, the commentary is half the race, and half travelog. Though we do that with football tournaments too, half way through a Euros game, Ally McCoist will explain the industrial history of Gelsenkirchen.

I switched it on, sat down with a sandwich and was instantly faced with a slow motion reply of Mark Cavendish throwing up from his bicycle. This wasn’t what I signed up for!

This a fun interview with an English cycling announcer here (starts at about 8:00) in which he explains that now the Tour de France gives the announcers a sites guide so they know what to talk about & have all the factlets ready to go 😂

I would watch but it's no longer on NBC Sports and I don't have access to whatever Peacock is.

I always try to explain this to people who say they don’t care about cycling. You get a daily, free, 5-hour helicopter tour of the French countryside for 3 weeks. Do you have any idea what that did for my mental health in 2020?

If you can find a British Eurosport feed somewhere on the internet I highly recommend their commentary over the USA broadcast. Same video, slightly more cheeky coverage.

They should have a documentary just about all the side attractions and historical landmarks they pass by. Maybe a daily program to accompany the stage?
