It seems like if context is implied loudly enough, you don’t gain much by spelling it out literally

It would be such a boss move if he walked right into Parliament and microwaved a cup of coffee, just to remind them that one man in the building is not subject to popular vote.

You sound like you think you invented purity police trolling. I think I first met you in my 1st election, 2000. I was a Green then. You were thick on the ground that year. I was honestly shocked, I didn’t think people would spite actual progress for a nutter like Bush, but you live and learn.

Jesus Christ. This has been out since at least yesterday and this is the first I've seen of it, but of course in that time I've seen 3000 ZOMG BIDEN MUST RESIGN pieces. And that's just at the NYT.

It still depends on what you’re working with, but most likely it’s still too limiting to think of yourself as an ecologist. You’re an expert in technologies that ecologists use. It will help you a lot to expand your perspective to people who use [thing goes here] in other fields.

Did not join my family visiting the Supreme Court. Visiting that hot mess this soon after seeing Jefferson’s personal library would be too much. You can see the shelf where Jefferson kept the books that inspired him re government in the middle.

Walked through the Library of Congress today. It’s beautiful. It feels like a small relief that it could likely survive the coming years because Trump can’t read and likely does not know it exists.

Setting aside that the entire principle of American government rests on the idea that an official will abuse whatever powers you grant them unless restrained by a credible threat of accountability. A system that depends on the good will of the executive to work is already something else.

It will be colored based on whether they want to go to war with Trump. I can skip to the end on this one, not one of those six has the courage to start that fight.

occurs to me that bribing the president is now /always/ legal, since in every case the only way to distinguish gratuity from bribe is via evidence that could never be admissible

Subject matter knowledge is what I think you mean about wide vs narrow? I think that’s specific to your subject. I have to know a lot of technologies for what I do but in other roles that’s not needed or even necessarily helpful. It’s very easy to over-complicate things (I get ribbed for that!).

Skill building is important. Know what kind of sales you do, what the alternatives are, and be able to articulate yr process. If you’re an engineer type like me then you’ll naturally go to solution sales unless told or trained to do otherwise. Knowing when to use diff methods is good.

If you are working sales then you have a few areas to keep an eye on. The first is networking - like science there are two kinds of people looking to hire: those who’ve met you, and those who haven’t. Use meetings the same way you would as a scientist, but work the vendor tables when you’re free.

Nearly 100% guaranteed that he would have the DOJ harass any plausible rivals until they drop out, and 95% odds that he comes up with something like “antifa” blowing up apartment buildings that lets him declare martial law indefinitely.

He won’t. Doing that would make Biden the one who killed democracy, and only a reckless maniac would go that far. In other words it will wait for the next Republican President. Then it’s over.

That’s the cruel paradox. If Biden uses the powers that SCOTUS gave him, then he will be the one who killed American democracy. He would never do that. SCOTUS knows it, which is why they gave the power while he’s still in office.

The fact that Biden has delivered on left-wing policy far better than any president in generations but is widely despised by left-wing voters reflects more poorly on left-wing institutions and voters than on Biden. This is not a movement showing political maturity, and I say that as a left-winger

It’s simpler than that. Trump has already promised to endorse ethnic cleansing wholeheartedly. If people don’t know the difference between not defending a people enough versus coming at them with both boots, I guess they will find out.

Ever since Spiro Agnew the GOP has used yeehaw populism to get, cough, persuadable types to vote their money upwards to the owner class. The marks always had the numbers, and with Trump the yeehaws took over the driver’s seat from genteel plutocrats like McConnell. Now the tiger’s riding him.

The old rule about attacking the integrity of elections being a net negative because discouraged supporters stay home could factor in here. No one has ever leaned as hard on elections being broken as Trump since he lost in 2020.

Nobody, and I mean really very few people, appreciates how good of a science communicator Rachel Carson was. John Muir had a lot going for him but protecting Yosemite kind of sells itself. She had a steep hill to climb and she changed the damn world. Respect.

I will have to see whether that’s a reference to the EDF arsons in Colorado. At the time I was getting some traction on local eco issues with people in the area and those EDF attacks shut it down permanently. Those arsons did property developers so many favors that I suspect they planned it.
