People often dismiss Green Day as "not real punk" but those people are discounting the fact that Billie Joe Armstrong is bisexual, and that making music that is half punk, half Broadway musical is in fact PEAK queerpunk 90s theater kid energy.

I really liked Green Day already, but you’re right, and this realization just made me love them even more.

Having no dog in this fight, I have to say that's a perfect argument in favor of Green Day being fucking Punk as hell.

I’m not going to be a dick and say a bunch of scene stuff. I will say that Green Day is punk to an extent. Good as well. Their sound is a little to clean for me at times, but good people. In the end no one can define you but you. Just in case you haven’t heard this band.youtu.be/PwovUUUuaQ8?...

He did a few demo sessions during the pandemic that were so impressive. As an original 1976 punk, I can say he’s legit.

Those people are also discounting the authenticity of the entire East Bay scene Green Day was birthed out of. They were disavowed as sellouts when they signed to a major label but read Dan Ozzi’s book Sellout for background. I have always been fascinated by their connections to Rancid.

I would’ve thought queerpunk 90s theater kid would’ve been Brian Molko and Placebo more than Green Day, but I’m probably wrong.

The folks concerned about what is and isn't "real" punk are the only ones who are, in fact, not punk.
Also, Dookie was punk AF.
