This new government is awful. It's been almost 24 hours and nobody has been sacked or had to resign yet. It's just not natural. Starmer should resign.

I've been seeing people saying that because JK Rowling routinely uses UK libel law to silence critics, Gaiman's failure to immediately do so shows his guilt. That's incorrect, and I think it's worth talking about why - it goes to important facets of defamation law abuse. šŸ§µāš–ļø

Pro Tip: Most paper publications live and die by advertiser dollars, NOT subs. The PAID subscription numbers drive ad prices. Clicks are nice and once drove prices, but since they can be schemed, paid subs are king. Boycott their advertisers, cancel your subscription.

Yep. The most fair and democratic distribution of seats relative to votes does not care who we like or dislike. Every other party loses from Labourā€™s massive gain, even the ones we detest.

"Pace myself up".

I know it's REALLY hard to grok, but pacing is not about increasing what you can do a little every day until you're back to normal. That's graded exercise therapy, and it does not work for people with PEM. šŸ§Ŗ #MECFS #LongCOVID

Something hopeful: We're 61 electoral votes away from passing the National Popular Vote compact. If, say, PA, NC, VA, MI pass the law, 272 electoral votes will be decided by the national popular vote. The legislative process is underway in those states.

Googleā€™s emissions are up 48% in 5 years. Microsoftā€™s are up 30% since 2020. Those soaring figures are being driven by mass investments in data centers to power AI tools. Generative AI is a climate disaster and data center expansion must be stopped.

Yes, a minority government or coalition government with independents or a third small party is what *should* happen. There is reason coalition governments are so frequent around the world in countries that use more democratic voting systems. Itā€™s not in itself a bad thing.

But the fact remains that Labour have a huge parliamentary majority from a minority of the vote, making a massive parliamentary gain from the most paltry increase in actual votes and 66% of the didnā€™t vote for them. Itā€™s not made less awful because the conservatives lost popularity.

I have no idea the best path re Biden but I do know a solid week straight of ā€œBiden Oldā€ and ā€œRich Dems Worriedā€ above-the-fold stories are *obscene* in the face of SCOTUS using the Constitution to wipe their asses purely in the service of reinstating a felon rapist as president. Crazy-making shit.

In a democratic voting system that bottom graph (seats won per million votes cast) should be approx equal for all parties. The same issue exists in the US, albeit with a smaller number of parties.

Labourā€™s share of the vote barely changes but they double their number of seats. FPTP is a wildly undemocratic way to run elections. (Yes, this is todayā€™s ā€œhill I will die onā€.)

Labourā€™s share of the vote is virtually unchanged since 2019 but suddenly they have doubled their share of seats. This is due to the flaws of First Past The Post (FPTP) voting system, which is by far the least democratic way to run elections. Itā€™s also part of why US politics is so badly broken.

Damn right. Itā€™s deeply undemocratic. Labor now have 62% of the seats in parliament, doubling their number of seats from 202 in 2019 to 412. BUT they won not even 34% of the vote, gaining a less than 1.5% more compared to the last election. Itā€™s crazy.

šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡ø and šŸ‡¬šŸ‡§, look at this: UK general election, Labour win 412 seats, a 63% majority and gain of 211 seats since last election. Stunning result. BUTā€¦ Only 33% of actual votes went to Labour, a tiny 1.3% gain since the last election. See how ā€œFirst Past the Postā€ voting produces undemocratic results?

What pisses me off most about the ā€œBiden is oldā€œ press coverage, is that Biden, and everyone around him, everyone in the White House, everyone around Harris, are far better human beings, and not intent on destroying things for their own wealth and power, than Trump and his MAGA cronies.

None of that will happen easily or quickly but it absolutely requires democrat majorities in the house and senate, i.e. our votes, and the prerequisite is the initial conversations need to happen. THAT NEEDS US, to call and lobby our local and state lawmakers to put those things on the agenda. 2/2

We fight fascism by staying in the battle. We fight fascism by demanding reform: New voting systems (more democratic and beak the current two-party disfunction), reform the senate and electoral college, expand the supreme court, term limits for senior justices, tough enforceable ethics rules. 1/2
