Exactly! Culture lag is a crucial part of nostalgia. It’s why 80s nostalgia includes interior design decisions made in the 70s. If someone got a GBC or N64 in 1999, and played it for five years before upgrading, that’s 00s nostalgia.

iMac G3 was 98-03, DK64 released November 99, GBC was November 98. You’re technically correct, but these were in use through the early 00s. Release date is less important than period of relevance.

Not *clear* plastic, but colored translucent plastic, yes. On top of the iMac was also the green N64 that came bundled with DK64, editions of the game boy color, and plenty more that I’m forgetting. It was a brief fad, but definitely happened.

Hi, this is literally me. Your crusade against my grammatically correct pronoun is misgendering me. “They” is also used in the singular when the gender is unknown: “someone left their wallet on the table.” You need to grow up and stop entrenching against real trans people.

As a nonbinary person who uses they/them - I do use “themself”. Same as how we use “yourself”/“yourselves” for singular/plural second-person reflexive.

Politics does not start and end at the ballot box. We can do a ton of stuff outside of the vote, but in the general election specifically, one option is better. Voting isn’t about feeling good, it’s a duty to pick the best candidate, even when they all suck.

It’s wild when people don’t understand how many different things are at stake. I care deeply about the Palestinian people, but there’s more than that on the ballot. Plus it’s not like Trump is any more likely to stop Israel. If anything, he’ll encourage them.

We don’t reject people that are truly ours, even when they suck, but we do push back against appropriation like Jews for Jesus (who are not actually Jews).

I love that in that universe, ships are just designed as towers where the constant 1G accel/decel provides "artificial gravity", and they only have to strap in for the mid-flight swap, or for docking.

Careful, if you dare insinuate that some men are lazy with their appearance or grooming, someone will accuse you of ableism because disabled people can’t always look their best. 😩

Yeah, the problem is that they throw up their hands and blend “the model” rather than their choice to use that model. Also because they’re using an unaccountable AI model, they have no published guidelines on what’s acceptable or not. Appeals go nowhere.

The options are varied, which is nice, but the automated filter is strongly misogynist. It’ll flag clothed women’s chests, while letting men post bare chests without any warnings. The algorithm literally thinks women are more pornographic than men.

I straight-up believe the lovers and haters are talking about two different condiments: Mai-o-nez: a delightful emulsion of good oil, fresh eggs, spices, citrus juice, chock full of flavor. Man-aise: a white goo from a jar, the cheapest oil mixed with factory eggs, and industrial acid. No spice.

Oh absolutely. It's just like...I think some folks have so little respect for fellow humans that the only way to reach them is by appealing to animals. When I got my autism diagnosis, my lifelong hatred of fireworks made a lot more sense.

So, great logician, how do you defend yourself against someone who wishes to do you harm if violence is off the table? If they fear no retribution from you and your allies? Your logic doesn’t work even in a simple Prisoner’s Dilemma rubric, much less a society.

It does get old that autism is used in this way to explain away social missteps. I know so many autistic folks who are self-aware enough of their shortcomings that they draw wide boundaries to avoid the possibility of impropriety. Just like, "I know I can't be sure, so I won't come close to it."

“It’s an addiction” is doing a lot of heavily lifting by the unstated assumption that addictions are bad or that addicts are bad people. I’m on a fairly comprehensive list of prescriptions I need to keep taking. They’re all great, just like coffee. 😎

Always a tension between being useful and being good for ratings, and obviously the snarky sound-bites and interruptions were good for ratings. But yeah at this point it's just like, the Dems have no reason to agree to do them if Trump's gonna be completely off the leash.

I always wondered why debates didn't have the mics controlled by the moderator, and have a team of fact-checkers on-hand. There was never any reason for someone's mic to be live when it wasn't their time, and moderators should have aggressively pushed back on obvious falsehoods.

The main bit of advice I can give you for your transition is that confidence is everything. And I don't mean having confidence, I mean faking it. Picking up drugs from a normie pharmacy? Walk in worried and anxious and it doesn't go well for me. Walk in owning the situation with my head held high

Septum is a piece of cake. They should be piercing below the cartilage, it’s a tiny pinch just like ear lobe piercings. It does hit nerves to make you sneeze or make your eyes run, but that’s it.

There’s a certain type of suburbanite from the 50s/60s that reads so autistic. Expects meals on the weekly schedule, a company man, wears the same suits, likes schedules and routine, freaks out about change… It wasn’t called autistic, but an autistic could thrive in that environment.

After 4 years of WFH, a change in venue could be considered a "material change" to the terms of employment. A unilateral decision to change the job without any offer or consideration could be considered "constructive dismissal" if they fire you for refusing.

All of those environments clean their floors on a daily basis if not more often. They also have hard surfaces as floors instead of carpets, rugs, and the like. So they’ve got that going for them.

Normal-ass behavior. You’re allowed to have opinions, and keeping them in private chats is exactly right. No one wants or needs to read everyone’s thoughts on them. World’s better when people who dislike me are still civil to me in public. 🤷🏻‍♀️

If you were "in the know", then maybe you knew Solovair. Most folks knew Docs and knew a punk or a musician who had worn the same pair of Docs for 15 years. They were *the boot* for certain subcultures, and they sold out that reputation for a quick buck.

It is, now. I mean, the reason why they're recommended over Docs is because they were a Docs subcontractor (IIRC) and have the same lasts. However, 10 years ago, Doc Martens were genuinely good. My pair is actually guaranteed for life, but they stopped selling that line.

Apparently Solovair is the heir to quality Docs. They were a subcontractor to Docs at one point, and continued making good ones. They don't have as much of the funky stuff, but they're (at least right now) solid and exactly what you'd want if you want a pair of basic Docs.

That brand that everyone recommended to “buy it for life?” Quietly sold to venture capital three years ago, and they’ve already hollowed out the company. Apparently I own one of the last good pairs of Docs. 😩

The feelings are real, but the root of the feeling is other people making you feel bad, and not *actually* being an imposter, and it's not just a psychological thing that you did to yourself! It's a very real failure for others to welcome you!

FWIW, "imposter syndrome" is a made-up term used to paper over bad behavior by (largely) white men. When qualified women and minorities were doubting their place (due to behavior and culture), they were told that they had "imposter syndrome" rather than the work culture being sick.

Honey. Make the post and let others decide that. To a fucking one, trans folks all think we deserve less help, attention, affection, etc. We need to fight that impulse to make ourselves small and shun assistance.

The amount of *padding* in my bandages made it all look BIGGER for the first few days. I only had to keep that on for a couple days and then the swelling went down fast. I think they don't generally remove skin because it's additional healing complication and it will reduce/atrophy naturally.

That article compares apples (furnaces) to oranges (heat pumps). Air conditioners are heat pumps, so as heat pumps become more widespread, the ratio will decrease.
