a thing that pro-trump “intellectuals” have never been able to reconcile is that the guy they see as some kind of world-spirit of the american people is very unpopular, which is how you get arguments like this one
(also, you’d never see these people run this play for someone like marion barry)
It’s all so wild to read these breathless descriptions of this fabled hero when there is so very little to the man. His garbage brain is a simple flow chart loop of pissing, moaning and whining.
He’s an honest to god freak and operates at a subhuman level and people worship him!
It also sort of gives the game away that these people think that the world-spirit of the American people is being stupid and angry.
I think they genuinely believe that "real America" is "being aggressively idiotic."
You may be too young for this, but in the Marion Barry era there was also Buddy Cianci up in Providence, RI. More like Rodney Dangerfield as a felon, though not to be messed with
What a fucking clown: "[S]tanding behind this familiar divide is a more profound division: between those who think that threats to our liberties are more likely to come from the unruly fringe and those who think such threats are more likely to emerge from the responsible-seeming center."
So much derangement can be traced directly back to the antidemocratic reality of the US colliding with the democratic self-conception of most US folks.
What’s glaringly missing from the author’s thought process is that T has reversed engineered his “outlaw” persona. He was lawless before he claimed he was doing so for the sake of others.
if you swap "trump" with "calhoun" you slam full-speed into the dunning school and it's near total historical and moral credibility among america's cultural elite for over a century
The followers of every fascist and cult leader (too redundant?) feel that he (gendered pronoun very much intended) speaks for them. That doesn’t make the leader pro-democracy.
Marion Barry had no malice and a great sense of humor.
When the mayor was asked what his plan was for dealing with a surprise February D.C. snowstorm, Barry replied that his plan was "April."
Trump is pure malice and has no sense of humor.
It all makes perfect sense so long as you internalize their firm belief that the 25-30% of Americans who love this guy are the only real Americans, the authentic Volk.
In some ways Trump basically IS Marion Barry for the right wing, right? Like, if there was surveillance video of him smoking crack, his supporters would mostly vote for him anyway.
Garbage writing.
Is that the spirit? Yeah, among the deluded base that's the "spirit".
But when you describe it in a way that fails to acknowledge that underlying delusion - and that the "outlaw" is prob the most corrupt and hypocritical person in this country - well you're kind of missing the boat.
"criminal persona, a persona his legal opponents have helped to thrust upon him" is breathtakingly shameless, but it does illustrate the foundational conservative view that being "a criminal" is not a function of what you *do* but the class/racial group to which you belong
caught doing, but voluntarily handed justice the evidence used against him, but because he is wealthy, he thinks he has earned being above the law and untouchable. That isn't how it works; it should be falls harder, not at all. ... 2
Trump isn't so much exposing those injustices, as he is creating them and sowing false doubt. Those poorer than him were manhandled with harsher than necessary punishment and even railroaded. He screams because he not only did the dirty deeds he got ... 1
Which Robin Hood myth involves him raping someone in a Bergdorf Goodman dressing room again? I forget.
(Nice to see my old prof Stephen Knight getting a namecheck. Pretty sure he'd think the article was specious bollocks, though.)
My assumption is that arguments like this - along with this guy saying 4 months back that ‘trump is a moderate, actually’ - are just pure, unadulterated bullshit. And the people making them know it, but would never admit it.
But he's popular among the REAL Americans, by which they mean the people who agree with them on tax cuts and abortion and immigration. Fake Americans (i.e. liberals) don't count. Checkmate.
Well, it seems pretty obvious that National Enqurer has acquired both the New York Times AND The Onion, put them in a blender and selected ‘chop’.
I can no longer tell if we are a-foot or on horseback. 💩
