Some years ago I took the Empire Builder Amtrak line from Chicago to Seattle. Two full days of travel each way. It was blissful.

I just saw someone say that people didn’t know about power dynamics 20 years ago and… just checking here… Are you high? That was the goddamn twenty-first century.

Trump's handlers at the Federalist Society have created Project 2025 in order to complete America's transition to a white/christian/male supremacist ethnostate. The recent SCOTUS decisions have, by design, only made this easier.

This has strong echoes of the prison-industrial complex, where share-holders in for-profit prisons were responsible for sponsoring many laws, the enforcement of which increased the population of said for-profit prisons. Up next - the resurgence of debtors' prisons. 5/5

If we look at the drivers behind the recent Chevron SCOTUS anti-decision, I wonder how many of the players involved were members of the insurance and health care industry. 4/n

...so we are paying for a service we can't use (insurance) in order to gain access to a service which will refuse us (health care) because the first service won't cover us, yet we can't stop paying for insurance because somehow things are worse without it. 3/n

...but we will now be, (even more than in the past three decades) in a system where we are required to have insurance for health care providers to even consider seeing us, and there is no chance that the insurance providers will cover whatever it was that sent us to the doctor in the first place 2/n

Given the SCOTUS ruling on Chevron, I expect we will soon see insurance companies give up even the pretense of offering service for a fee, and they will begin denying coverage for everything, everywhere across the board. Sure, the corporate bootlick SCOTUS decision doesn't prevent litigation 1/n

Most *white* Americans. There is no country on earth that imprisons more of its population than the US. Prisoners disproportionately Black. The US leads the world in child executions. Not a typo. Disproportionately Black. Life expectancy for US Black folk lower than for Uighur Chinese. Not a typo

“I will not use my office to the fullest extent allowable but my opponent will” is a really bad takeaway actually. Just pack the court man.

March 23 1933, the Enabling Act becomes law in Germany, giving the chief executive power enforce his own laws without checks and balances. The passing of the Act marked the formal transition from democratic republic to totalitarian dictatorship. 6 months later, it was a 1 party state.

The United States has always been a democracy for some and a brutal authoritarian regime for others, and the effort to expand it to democracy for all has led to a 70+ year backlash culminating in SCOTUS claiming that kings are totes cool and also judges are the ones to coronate them

As someone who works almost exclusively with PhD-level colleagues, I don't find this reassuring. 😉 A PhD isn't a marker of intelligence, it's a sign of domain-specific knowledge earned through research, study & scholarship, which we know AI to be incapable of.

Every goddamn news source in the country played along with the Republican pearl-clutching because Hillary Clinton suggested that 25% of the electorate was a bunch of racist, misogynistic demagogue-loving fascism apologists.

For those (and there are few of them on BlueSky) who insist "institutional racism" is not a thing in America in 2024, I give you the Goon Squad, which ran roughshod over part of Mississippi for years. They tortured & framed African-Americans with impunity for years. Mississippi tax dollars at work.

Your reminder the organization behind those Christian "He Gets Us" ads you'll see during the Super Bowl also gives tens of millions of dollars to the Alliance Defending Freedom, the far-right lawyers who overturned Roe and write most of the anti-trans laws in the country

Here's one for #smallpoemsunday, one of my all-time favorites:

BUT WHY do you always go to the wall?
Why does he go to the wall?

You go to the wall
because that’s where
the door is

maybe.
