The requirement forces Oklahoma teachers to "reference" the role of the Ten Commandments in America's founding, so as a historian & teacher, let me offer this suggestion:
"Although some idiots today insist that the Founding Fathers were inspired by the Ten Commandments, they absolutely were not."
If the new constitution were inspired by the Bible; and if the general public wanted a form of government that was based on the Bible; then advocates of that constitution would certainly have attempted to demonstrate how Biblical it was. But the Federalist Papers never once cites the Bible. Why?
Not sure if you know this Kevin, no human civilization had a single law before god carved 10 of them in stone with his finger (possibly his index finger, but reports conflict) before giving them to Moses. Ergo all law must be derived from those 10.
I don't have a problem with the 10 commandments in a religious setting- the don't belong in public schools or government settings. However, I believe these "commandments" are more closely aligned with Christ's teachings. www.indigenouspeople.net/tencomm.htm
Ok then. Talk about the verse that says the sin of Sodom was not caring for their poor. Go over the Beatitudes. Quote Jesus saying sell all you have and give unto the poor, and my kingdom is not of this world….
Also, treating the Bible as a historical document is what the best 19th century German criticism did. “Students, you need to understand how this book was cooked up in response to Seleucid tax law, by the most deranged people who ever walked this earth.”
Granted, it’s not so silly if you’re a zealous member of the Christian dominionist movement. They don’t distinguish between how their pastor/whichever billionaires run & fund their megachurch interpret the Ten Commandments and the secular state, because they’re supposed to be one and the same.
Can this be a "Jefferson Bible"? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeffers... He Founded. He Fathered. He espoused Deist views in historic context of "the artificial vestments in which they have been muffled by priests, who have travestied them into various forms, as instruments of riches and power "
"Today, children, we're going to learn about coveting your neighbor's wife. Please turn to the assigned reading from the Song of Solomon and the story of David and Bathsheba. Don't forget to ask an adult any questions you have about adultery!"
So that's the thing, isn't it? The law is unconstitutional but if it gets upheld by the bribe patrol then showing all the ways the founders purposely avoided enshrining religion in law is a proper application of the insistence teachers use the Bible to teach.
Oh and the "historical context of our country" is that the Founding Fathers knew from hard personal experience that the mixing of religion and government had caused centuries of war and chaos across Europe, so when they set up a new country here THEY VERY EXPLICITLY DID NOT DO THAT.
these people are desperate to co-opt taxpayer-funded education to proselytize religion. it's like they know their ideas can't succeed on their own merits
They both have 10ish items! Anyway. Both the Bible and the typical number of human fingers influenced the constitution. Your literary analysis of “The Art of the Deal” is due tomorrow.
These are my favorite kinds of laws because it demands that I teach real history. Any teacher worth their salt can get around these stupid laws by simply doing exactly what they say.
As a retired teacher, let me tell you that will get you reprimanded and possibly fired. This will be a serious problem and all the comments taking this as a joke do not realize the situation this puts teachers in. This is horrible and my fear is scotus will let it stand.
