There's one in the grocery store here in little old Noble, Oklahoma. I was in there one day and did a double take when i saw it next to the Lays potato chips.

The multi-county library system here in central Oklahoma has most of these services. They're slightly less accessible right now because the largest and newest library building is closed for repairs (improperly built), but most have been farmed out to branch libraries and other community spaces.

I often just use them in place of the bulb when i have them. Chop them fine. One of my favorites in garlic scape/asparagus season is to saute them together in olive oil with anchovies and red pepper flakes, and mix that with pasta.

When my youngest kid was little, one year he asked for a salt lick for his birthday. We got him one of those rabbit disks. He'd come home from school and grab his salt off a saucer. Still carries around salt packets for when his foot isn't adequately seasoned.

Yeah it’s not like we’ll see a repeat of 1968, when the Democrats downshifted to a Vice President at a convention in Chicago that was plagued by protests against the party’s support for an unpopular foreign war and wound up creating an opening for a candidate they’d beat before. Totally different!

A few years ago, Jon Lovett floated a theory that media treats Democrats like protagonists - to be challenged, accounted, and forced to be behave in growth-oriented ways - while the GOP are treated like antagonists - immutable, expected to disrupt, thematic obstacles. Thinking about that a lot.

That was my childhood in the San Gabriel Valley, in Richard Nixon's hometown. We'd usually have school for a few hours in the morning and then be sent home early in the afternoon. My mother used to tell me stories about how bad the San Francisco Bay smelled when she was a girl. Things got better.

I wouldn't eat cooked tomatoes in any form (including pizza or pasta sauce) until i was 13. I had only ever eaten my mom's home-grown tomatoes right off the vine and cooked fruit smelled wrong. All forms & preparations of tomato are the best, except for those pink potatoes sold fresh as "tomatoes."

The Oklahoma Supreme Court issued a strong ruling today, holding 6-2 that a religious charter school violates Oklahoma law and Constitution and the U.S. Constitution. GOP AG Drummond fought the charter school board on this and won. www.oscn.net/applications...

Home Ec is still around. It's called family and consumer sciences now. It's still an elective, but lots of kids at our local schools take the classes. There are also good classes in domestic arts at county extension offices. You don't have to be in 4H.

It is the worst pepper. If you can't just give it away to 1 of the weirdos who like their peppers unripe, IMO the green ones are most tolerable raw. Slices dipped in plenty of garlicky hummus could have their nastier qualities sufficiently masked to be edible, if no better vegetables are available.

Velvet ants (Mutillidae and Myrmosidae) are pretty cool creatures! Despite their name, they are actually wasps, and not ants. (Most) males are winged, and females do not have wings.

There's also the thing that our contemporary writers are just better at writing. I've tried to re-read some of the "golden age" sci-fi i consumed voraciously as a teen in the 80s, and some of it is just so stiff and clunky. And yes, the misogyny (or just ignoring that women exist and do stuff).

Sometimes the roots of plants in that family just become unhappy. I haven't investigated further to figure out if it's a fungus or something else, but it is something i've seen a lot of.

When i was an undergrad at Berkeley, i took a local natural history class that included many birdwatching field trips. That was the most unpleasant and stressful part of the course. I avoided my binoculars for years.

An entirely different category of belongings, but similar levels of anxiety: my mother has the pewter tea set her grandfather bought, with his initials engraved. It's objectively ugly, and if not actually toxic, is at least the worst way to serve tea. I don't want it, my cousins don't want it.
