Octopus sometimes team up with fish to hunt! But if the octopus is displeased with its partner, it may punch it in the head. Researchers observed eight such incidents between 2018 and 2019, while diving in Israel and in Egypt

Like very tiny phoenixes, trilobites that died 515 million years ago rise from the ashes. Volcanic ash from an eruption in what is now Morocco preserved imprints of their bodies, & when scientists reconstructed them as 3D models they identified anatomical details never seen before in trilobites 🧪

Little personal news: I've been promoted! I'm now Polygon's Entertainment Editor, overseeing the film/TV/books/etc. vertical. As always, I'm looking to work with more freelancers and get more voices on the site. If you specialize in current SF/F media, this is a great time to hit me up:

I had a whole paragraph about this that I ended up cutting for length! The science in this movie was so atrocious & embarrassingly bad that it led to the creation of a federal agency (The Science & Entertainment Exchange) specifically to connect Hollywood filmmakers with scientific experts

Deep inside Earth is a solid ball of hot metal nearly as big as the moon—and it spins! Convection + gravity push & pull at the inner core so its rotation speeds up & slows down over decades. It's now moving so slowly it's going "backward" relative to the mantle, data from paired earthquakes shows 🧪

Nothing says #July4 like a juicy slice of watermelon. This delicious fruit doesn't just appear on our picnic table. It takes a lot of work. An average watermelon weighs 20 lbs. It's 100+ degrees in Bakersfield today. Can you imagine harvesting them in high temps? #WeFeedYou

Wild to me that I grew up among Jews who marinated our young brains in the long history of European antisemitism, but who somehow neglected to mention the American Nazis who formed chapters across the country; ran summer camps centering Nazi ideology; and rallied with the Klan

The United States has always been a democracy for some and a brutal authoritarian regime for others, and the effort to expand it to democracy for all has led to a 70+ year backlash culminating in SCOTUS claiming that kings are totes cool and also judges are the ones to coronate them

As it happens, I sidestepped into science writing through filmmaking! I was a generalist producer/editor for a while, then started writing and directing museum exhibit videos, and then later shifted into science journalism. It's not how everyone does it, but it worked for me!

For a closer look at Coles' book, which he self-describes as "Work of such a Refined and Useful Method," here's a digital copy: www.botanicus.org/title/b12080...

My favorite part is before the Table of Contents where Coles includes flattering poems from admirers of his work, truly a baller move

Coming up with a catchy, snappy book title is HARD, so shoutout to the 17th-century British botanist William Coles, who rather than aiming for brevity used so many words to title his 1657 plant history book that the result exceeds character limits and the average human attention span

Not only do ants amputate the legs of their injured nestmates, they also evaluate battle wounds first to decide if a mangled limb needs amputation! And ants that receive attention for injuries are more likely to survive than ants that aren't treated! Amazing story by @bittelmethis.bsky.social 🧪

When I took this photo of a red-winged blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus) perched overhead at the local marsh, I had no idea that the backlighting would reveal so many galls! Leaves produce these circular growths in response to irritation, usually caused by insects, fungus, bacteria or nematodes
