I’m still unsure about how I’m going to vote, but the dark upshot of living in KY is that there’s absolutely no way my vote can make a difference in the presidential election.

Those all very clearly are speaking about a subset of rural white folks, not saying all of us are like that. Do you know many liberal white rural folks? We’re not offended. It’s the bigots who are offended. Hit dogs holler.

Either is fine. Semi colons join two independent clauses: periods separate them. Neither a comma nor a colon work here, though.

I’m veggie and like salty/umami things, so I bought a bunch of “sipping broth” tea bags for when I’m not hungry but want flavor - just yummy veggie teas. They’re lovely. They also do not make me more or less healthy!

Vanessa was right about Anna's act of love saving herself. Gpa troll never said it had to be true love's kiss, that's just how they misinterpreted him - it was a red herring. Sacrificing yourself is the greatest "act of true love" and no one can truly thaw your heart but yourself.

I got a good enough score that I was persuaded to apply a few places despite a 2.5 GPA just to see what would happen. Ended up getting into everywhere I applied, but I was fully aware that my intractable habit of never going to class (see above GPA) would not serve me well in Law School so I passed.

It's absolutely nuts. I mean, it's nuts to use violence as punishment on anyone who completely relies on you for their well-being. But it's especially grotesque for toddlers who barely even have the ability to form sentences. What on earth could anyone think that could possibly achieve.

Hard agree. Whatever happened to just saying, "I love Susan but she sure can be exhausting sometimes!" and then moving on? Talk like a human, not like an alien awkwardly describing the friendship rituals of our species.

I was born in 1985 and grew up in smallish-town bible belt. My elementary school had a paddling policy. I had a VERY strongly worded letter on file making it clear that I was never to be subject to that policy. My dad was complicated, but he was staunchly anti-spanking, which I am grateful for.

I took it years ago during the 5-section era. There were 3 logic game sections that year, which suited me just fine, but definitely drove some folks to madness.

I’ve read Ronson’s book and I’ve read Thomas’s book. Everyone describes, at some point, caring about someone else and feeling bad about their actions. It’s just that their values suck so aggressively that they’ve limited the pool of people worth caring about to a very small number.

Her description of her own behavior doesn’t match an incapacity for remorse or empathy. It matches an incapacity for remorse or empathy for victims of very minor property crimes, which isn’t the same thing. And there’s no clinical study proving lack of empathy or remorse. Just random case studies.

“We” aren’t talking about anything. I’m saying that I don’t believe that people incapable of empathy or remorse exist. The linked article in the OP doesn’t describe such a person, it describes a person who committed low-level misdemeanors causing little harm and doesn’t feel bad about them.

That’s a values mismatch. Even history’s greatest monsters had people they empathized with or actions they felt remorse for, it’s just that they felt those feelings about the wrong things or for the wrong reasons.

I have never met or heard of anyone who appears to not have the ability to feel empathy or remorse. There are people who aren’t remorseful for actions that I think they should feel remorseful for, or don’t have empathy for people I think they should empathize with. But that’s different than capacity

I believe there are folks with a constellation of symptoms that meet the diagnostic criteria for APD as currently described in the DSM. What I don’t believe is that there is a population of people among us without the capacity for empathy or remorse.

I became immune to fat jokes when I mentioned my then-size 8/10 butt was uncomfortable on airline seats and the overwhelming response was that I was too fat to fly. That was so silly that all fat jokes became equally dumb to me.

Begrudgingly allow kids to have differences but don’t let them experience joy in what makes them special and unique? Never highlight or celebrate them for their exceptionalities? What a sad way to parent. We should praise and encourage our kids for what makes them special.

Also worth noting that Vance only spent a few weeks a year in Appalachia. Most of the time he was in small-town Ohio. I’m married to a guy from small-town Ohio, so I’d never knock the disadvantages. But it isn’t Appalachia.

One of the great stories in my family is when a traveler confused my great-grandfather for his brother (one a bootlegger, one a teetotaler) and nearly got shot for refusing a drink. He named the wrong brother as his contact to be allowed through the county during prohibition.

He was referencing the cleanness off the glass, not its contents. Also, I grew up with southern Baptist who kept a secret bourbon bottle in the basement kitchen because they couldn’t drink openly. Their glassware was still impeccable.

One of my great-grandmothers had a dirt floor well into the 70s, but still kept house “in case the Queen of England stops by”. She obviously didn’t expect such a visit, but the lesson was that you should take care of your space end be proud of what you have.

Was there an online-only option? I would turn down any offer that involves anyone sending things to my house that I'll have to toss later. That's one of the reasons I don't have a subscription to my small local paper but do have one to the large regional paper in the nearest city.

It doesn't happen all that much at the Zoo where I work. Probably because nearly all middle aged dudes that come through are there with their wives and kids. Not that that's a deterrent to some dudes, but it does seem to cut down on that kind of thing relative to other customer-facing jobs.

I lived in Owensboro from my 8th-12th grade years and used to go to that library a lot. If I had to stay in the "juvenile" section I would have just stopped going. It's unclear from the article if all cards issued to minors will have that restriction or if it's optional. Hopefully the latter!
