At least one London Borough maintains 'County of Middlesex' signs on its border where relevant, or at least did well after 1965 - Hounslow, I think. But Middlesex's purchase on collective identities is, I'm sure you're right, diminishing.

I loathed football growing up, and indeed all sport; I can watch some of it now (helpful when keeping an elderly all-round sportsman father company) but some I still find at best very odd.

...but otherwise there is little about 1813 to be learned from Rogue, but a lot of questions about layers of interpretation and current Doctor Who's decision to fixate on the most current period drama (itself an alt-universe fantasy). We are visiting several 1813s at once. 2/2

This is a brilliant engagement with the social etiquette which I'm not at all sure of; I indulged the duchess's acceptance of Ruby by deciding that the duchess knows Collins's Peerage and the local families backwards and is intrigued by the imposter who will be exposed by and by... 1/2

Listening to James Timpson's interview, it is clear that he would like to see a sea-change in sentencing policy. That will not be his remit, but if the new PM supports such a change, I think it would have very significant ramifications for our political culture. Let me explain. /1

Defecting to Sky's election coverage after the BBC miss another count (Harrogate and Knaresborough). They have a virtual Keir Starmer in the studio, ready to carry the real one off to the plastic gallery in Madame Tussauds.

If you're in the UK, reading the press coverage of the general election, and thinking 'yay, it's going to be like 1997 on Friday', take a moment to remember 1992. If you don't recall, find someone who does. Go out and vote tomorrow. Every vote matters. Tell your friends and get them voting too!
