Seriously, how is the whole "debate" about whether or not you reuse the "barf bowl", and not why the fuck are you using a bowl for it in the first place?

Same! And in my case, it was because my oldest son brought it home from kindergarten on his first day, kind of tough to not catch COVID once it's in the house.

Makes sense unfortunately, and I totally understand that panicking doesn't help. I guess I just take issue with calling it "idiotic and hyperbolic" when some form of collapse (or crumbling) is not completely outside the realm of possibility

...United States is one election away from collapse; indeed that sort of idiotic hyperbolic panic..." I guess I'm wondering, why is this "idiotic hyperbolic panic"? With how the Supreme Court is acting, the lack of significant institutional pushback, and the additional factor of global warming, I

So I read through this blog, it was really interesting to see the historical context of liberalism and really put things into perspective - said as someone who feels weird being called a liberal (in modern US contexts) sometimes.
I do have a question about this though: "I do not think that the...

Google’s emissions are up 48% in 5 years. Microsoft’s are up 30% since 2020. Those soaring figures are being driven by mass investments in data centers to power AI tools.
Generative AI is a climate disaster and data center expansion must be stopped.

If that happened, we could actually get some legitimate third parties too - much less of a hurdle to snag a seat or two

14% is less terrible than I thought, given how many seats they managed to win for Labour while getting even bigger numbers. Still, *if* the Tories and "Reform" manage to actually work together next time, then that's hella dangerous.

Not to mention that it's coming from all the same people who were basically like, suck it up, he's running again and he's your only choice.
Like, no shit he's really old! We knew! We could've sorted this out in the primaries, but noooo

The reality was... not particularly funny.

The real "oh, fuck" moment for me personally in 2016 wasn't when Trump appeared to get enough electoral votes, it was when Clinton conceded so quickly. When it became clear none of the establishment politicians actually meant what they were saying about the existential threat, that was it.

Right? As far as American elections go, it wasn't *that* close either, it was a ~3 million vote margin. Trump was never a legitimate president, and it's been surreal for people to act like he was.

The United States has always been a democracy for some and a brutal authoritarian regime for others, and the effort to expand it to democracy for all has led to a 70+ year backlash culminating in SCOTUS claiming that kings are totes cool and also judges are the ones to coronate them

I wrote a book on the 19th century Supreme Court and the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad Roger Taney who infamously wrote in Dred Scott v Sanford that enslaved & free Black people had "no rights which the white man was bound to respect." I agree with Bouie that Roberts is comparably bad.

I mean, this actually seems like a reasonable idea. It's a lot better than my first idea, which involves Biden using his new "official powers" on SCOTUS.

If the Supreme Court decides in favor of Trump’s claim that a sitting president has immunity from prosecution, the logical and legal thing for Biden to do would be to simply assassinate him before the election

So I'm going to have to be annoyingly pedantic here - not voting counts as half a vote for Trump, not a full vote. In the example above, a 12-8 Trump win means he wins by 4, not 2. Not voting may effectively be a vote for Trump, but it's not *quite* the same.

Tories taking a huge hit from the cumulative scandals, particularly the betting thing I think. Labour levelling off as a result, Farage absolutely cleaning up. If the Sunak campaign isn’t careful this could really tip reform over the tipping point to getting a significant result.
