Is the "Pepsi tastes like battery acid (derogatory)" gene a dominant thing that has become more widespread? I wonder if that contributes. I know a few friends who can't drink Pepsi but love Coke/RC/[generic cola] for this reason

You're right. Another factor: Pepsiman is much further away in Japanese popular history than Dr Pepper is. (SteinsGate popularised Dr Pepper to the Japanese no thanks to the antics of a Pepper-guzzling, banana-microwaving time travelling scientist)

I take pleasure in this because I drank Pepsi Max/Zero almost exclusively for years, until they changed the formula and ruined it. Dr. Pepper was my favorite soda when I drank sugar, still my fountain drink, and now one of my main diets (though I drink far less soda of any kind these days.)

I thought that was implied. When I’m in a restaurant and they ask if I want anything to drink, I say Diet Coke. They’ll say is Diet Pepsi or Pepsi Ok? I’ll say do you have Dr Pepper (usually Pepsi places also have it). And if they say no to Dr Pepper then I just say no thanks, no drink for me.
